With our youngest now moved into Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York, my husband and I are official empty nesters, and yes, it is sad and hard for me. Luckily, our son is not too far away … about a four hour commute any way you slice it be it car, train, plane, or bus. Yes, even flying takes about four hours door-to-door.

When I think about college, I know it’s all about fit; finding the right college where your child feels comfortable and can thrive. My son’s older sisters have both chosen well and found a place that they can call home. We think our son has picked a place that we think he will never leave. He’s always been the calm, zen kid that can handle the hustle and bustle of New York City, and he’s always thrived on being surrounded by diversity be it food, people, or culture.

While I have checked on him during these first few weeks, I am mostly getting one or two text word answers, as expected. I have his sisters checking on his as well, even the one studying abroad in Singapore. Everyone is reporting back that he is fine. Happy. Doing well. I guess I am not surprised but perhaps he is adjusting better than I am!

There is Family Day coming up in October where we hope to meet his friends and see his artwork. I can’t wait!
