My husband’s college roommate, Michael Castillo, is visiting us here in Boston. He’s the head pro for The Plantation Course on Kapalua, a resort in Maui. The fires have been devastating and it’s not always clear what is the best way to help those affected.
I talked to Michael for ideas. The first, and most important, is that Maui is OPEN! The economy of Hawaii is heavily dependent on tourism which makes up 25% of the total revenue! While the town of Lahaina is devastated and off-limits, the rest of the island of Maui still needs your support! If you have a vacation to Maui already on the books, please don’t cancel! And while you are there, if you play golf, enjoy Kapalua’s discounted rates through December!
I personally like to support small businesses, especially Native Hawaiians. I found Nā Mea Hawai’i, showcasing the work of local artists and crafters from the Hawaiian Islands, in particular Native Hawaiian artists, and bought a few items to gift to my kids in December.
Michael tells me that the hotels within Kapalua — The Ritz Carlton, Montage Kapalua Bay, and The Kapalua Villas — are discounting their roommates through the end of the year to encourage visitors. If you need an excuse to visit Maui, this is a good one! Mahalo!
