Guest Post by Dustin Brady

I am delighted to welcome Dustin Brady to talk about his latest book for kids, World’s Worst Time Machine!

About the Book:

From best-selling author, Dustin Brady comes a new illustrated novel series perfect for fans who love funny, unexpected adventures and wacky plot twists.

For kids, life can be boring, but Liam and Elsa know how to create their own fun — or so they think. After finding a $ 3 time machine at a garage sale, Liam uses the machine to summon Thomas Edison for help with his book report. It’s not until the time machine sends a different Thomas Edison from the 1930s that chaos ensues.

World’s Worst Time Machine is the newest series from best-selling children’s book author of the Trapped in a Video Game series, Dustin Brady. Using his signature style, Brady’s laugh-out-loud sense of humor and daring adventure will keep even the most reluctant reader wanting to turn the page.

STUFF THAT KIDS LIKE

I recently did a virtual visit with a class that had read my Trapped in a Video Game series. I asked the students if they had any questions for me, and they all raised their hands with “questions” that were not actually questions, but rather statements.

“Um, I like Minecraft Dungeons.”

“Um, me and Alex and Gunner are writing a story about Minecraft Dungeons.”

“Um, I play Minecraft on the Switch.”

“OK,” I said. “Let’s try to do a question that ends in a question mark. Maybe about my book?”

A boy in the front raised his hand. “Um, I just wanted to say good job on writing a book about stuff that kids like.”

“Thanks!” I replied. It wasn’t technically a question, but it was something nice about me, which (in my opinion) is even better than a question.

“Cuz a lot of authors write about stuff that’s not interesting to kids,” the boy continued. “Like the Great Depression.”

I smiled and showed the class my new book. It’s about the Great Depression.

It doesn’t advertise itself as a book about the Great Depression, of course. It’s called World’s Worst Time Machine. It features a battle with super-bouncy bouncy balls. Cheetos play a major role in the plot. But the history is in there. Specifically, it’s in the last six pages of the book.

My goal with this new series is to get kids just as invested in those final six pages of real-life history as they are in any video game. That’s a tough challenge! There are no Minecraft dungeons in real life. But there are compelling characters that readers can grow attached to. There are scenarios that feel too fantastic even for a book about time travel. There are historical moments of humor and action and heart I can use to color my story.

Getting kids to care about things like reading, science, and history is more difficult now than it’s ever been. It can be easy to blame that on Minecraft. But sometimes, I think, we don’t spend enough time listening to kids. We probably know what they like (Because they tell us at every opportunity, and even opportunities that are not technically opportunities!), but do we know why they like what they like? Do we understand what makes them tick?

I want to reach kids where they are. Maybe that means actually paying attention to the questions that aren’t questions. Maybe that means asking a few more questions of my own.
