New England’s Violin Making History is a Story of Innovation

John Chuang shares his violin collection and tells the history of violin and bass viol making in New England at the Museum of Fine Arts. It’s a story of innovation, technology transfer, and globalization.

Bobby Giglio, Pappalardo Assistant Curator of Musical Instruments, collector of New England string instruments John Chuang, and internationally respected cellist Shirley Hunt take a deep dive into the making and music of violin-family instruments in 19th-century New England.

See examples from the MFA’s important holdings of these instruments, alongside exceptional instruments from Chuang’s own collection, and hear them through live performances.

John Chuang co-founded Aquent in 1986 while an undergraduate at Harvard University. Within five years, he grew the company from dorm-room startup to the 12th fastest-growing private company in America. He has served as CEO from the beginning.
