Going Creative With Neil Young: On Staying Open

For a Creative, or creative entrepreneur, rest isn’t a break from the process. It is the process.

So around here, we start each week with day of deliberate creative rest… A day to switch off. Lie low. Be present. Let go.

For me, that day is Sunday. Maybe that doesn’t suit you but one day out of seven, have a lazy day. All your projects and people will benefit, and none more than you.

Going Creative With Neil Young: Each Sunday, I feature a creative, creativist or creativepreneur talking about some aspect of going creative. This week, it’s musician Neil Young on the importance of staying open. And below, my favorite Neil Young performance.

“I’m always interested in reaching out to anyone who wants to listen, but really, I’m doing it for myself…

“As long as it’s good music and I’m playing with my friends, I don’t care what genre it is. All my music comes from all music — I’m not country, I’m not rock ‘n’ roll, I’m just me, and all these things are what I like.

“I don’t like to be labeled, to be anything. I’ve made the mistake before myself of labeling my music, but it’s [always] counter-productive.

“I’ve learned one thing: you don’t want to close the door on anything.”

Showing my age with this choice. From 1974: Neil Young Sings “Helpless” with The Band at their farewell concert, The Last Waltz. See the movie if you haven’t.
