Attendance rate in Grand Slams: Which one holds the record? Is the US Open 2023 going to set an all-time high record?

No one can doubt the popularity of the most prestigious tennis championships in the world, the well-known Grand Slams. The four tournaments receive such widespread attention from fans, visitors and bettors, that they are eventually placed at the top of the list with the most popular sporting events in the world.

The four Grand Slams not only capture the audiences’ interest across the planet, who watch either live streamed or broadcasted the tennis matches between the top seeds of the sport, but they also generate tremendous revenues from ticket sales, reporting skyrocketing attendance rates this way.

And let’s not forget that these events also gather enormous betting revenues, as reported by all bookmakers over the world -from US sportsbooks to danske bookmakere, as people get excited at backing their favorite player and try to make profits from testing their ability to accurately predict outcomes and results.

Besides being vastly popular amongst viewers and bettors, the Grand Slam championships are amongst the most attended sporting events in the world. People just love to sit on the court, watching how the ball bounces back and forth into the two sides listening to the players’ grunting. And waiting to feel all the energy and the heat when they hear that ‘Game, Set, Match’ slip from the lips of the Umpires.

They don’t bother being ‘forced’ to make absolutely no noise while the match is on, or having to wait until there is some sort of break to stand up their seats. They simply adore watching their favorite tennis players compete for the title and receive all the pleasure from seeing live the most noble and elite sport unfold. They love to watch upsets happening right in front of their eyes, celebrating in this way the volatility and the brilliance of tennis – in fact, they are absolutely fascinated by upsets, unless their wagered money is at stake (for more information about betting go here).

For these and many more reasons, the Grand Slams are considered to be the ultimate tennis championship events from an attendance rate perspective. The fact that in the previous two years there were restrictions due to the Covid-19 pandemic, has made these events even more attractive to visitors this past year. And this is rather clear, if we watch plain numbers.

The Australian Open that was held last Winter -in January 2023- has set an all-time Grand Slam attendance record. Nearly 900.000 visitors purchased tickets for the two-week event (more than 900.000 if we consider the qualifying rounds one week earlier), making it the most attended championship of all.

This figure surpassed the previous record of almost 812.000 spectators in Melbourne again back in 2020, while it also dwarfed this year’s Roland Garros’ and Wimbledon’s attendance rates.

The French Open was attended by approximately 630.000 spectators at the end of May-beginning of June this year while Wimbledon welcomed almost 532.000 fans, who crossed the gates to the most iconic grass court Grand Slam.

The Australian Open attendance record was set even though huge tennis names were missing from the draws. Serena Williams and Roger Federer, who have traditionally been selling more tickets than every other tennis player across the world, did not appear in the tournament. But even their absence could not stop fans from watching their favorite competition live.

Now all eyes are on the US Open 2023. This Grand Slam has been constantly generating enormous interest from visitors all those years. Last year, the US Open was attended by almost 776.000 spectators, setting its own record. What will happen this year?
With big names such as Carlos Alcaraz and Iga Swiatek defending their titles and Novak Djokovic, Aryna Sabalenka, Elena Rybakina, Ons Jabeur, Danjil Medvedev and many more hoping to get the title, it is pretty much certain that people will want to watch huge match-ups right in front of their eyes. Even with Rafael Nadal, Nick Kyrgios and other big stars missing, it is expected that the attendance will skyrocket and maybe it will set a new record. Who knows…
