 Introduction

Television is the source of information or communication, and media play a significant role in everyone's life. TV is one of the mass mediums. TV has become a very big part of our lives today. Basically, its duty is to inform, educate, and entertain. In this paper, I am going to write about critical evaluation and the role of Television in Christian families.

  1. Television

The word television is derived from the Latin word "tele," which means far and distance, and the Latin word vision," which means sight. Therefore, the television is a widely used telecommunications system for broadcasting and receiving moving pictures and sound over a distance. John Logie Baird invented the television. His first TV set was made of scissors, an old tea chest, and some sealing wax.

  1. Christian families.

The Christian family is the one that lines up with biblical principles and in which each member of the family understands and fulfills their God-given role. The family is not an institution designed by man. It was created by God for the benefit of man, and man has been given stewardship over it. The first requirement for the members of a Christian family is that they all have a true relationship with Jesus Christ as their lord and as the head of the family. The epistle of Ephesians 5:22–26 provides guidelines for the spouse in a Christian family. The husband is required to love his wife as Christ loved the church, and the wife should respect her husband and willingly submit to his leadership in the family.

  1. Television ministry.

Television in ministry is known as televangelism. Tele means distance, and evangelism means ministry. Therefore, televangelism uses the media, especially television and radio, to communicate about Christianity. Televangelists are ministers who devote a large portion of their ministry to television broadcasting. Some televangelists are regular pastors. Nowadays, television is the most contemporary and attractive way to do ministry. One of the senior pastors, Dr. Simon Pandey, runs the program "Message of Hope on Television," which is known as television ministry. It can enrich the family relationship with their neighbors, and it helps the people have general knowledge and religious knowledge, and so on. [1]

  1. Television in Nepal

Television in Nepal was first introduced in 1985 A.D. [2]. Nepal Television is the oldest and most watched television channel in Nepal. For many years, this was the only television channel from Nepal. The news broadcast at 8:00 p.m. is the channel's most popular show, followed by comedy programs Sakkigoni and Merri Bassai.

  1. History of Television

If we turned back to look at the history of television, it would give us more amazing facts and truths about television. I have come to know some of the truths and facts about which I am writing here. John L. L. Baird invented the first television in 1925 A.D., but the word television was first used by Constantin Parskyi, the Russian scientist. It is believed that the first television remote control was invented by the Zenith Company. Some of the television names were Octagon (1928) and Philco (1958). Raytheon (1948), Sony (1989), Samsung (2007), LCD (2008), and nowadays 4K and 8K TVs, all of these televisions were big in size and black and white during 1928–1970. Later, color television came. From the history of television, I have come to know that today's television has more facilities and is easier to run than historical television. [3]

  1. function of television

The main functions of television are to educate, inform, and entertain the audience. Educational television programming can focus on art, history, literature, politics, science, economics, and just about any other branch of human knowledge in existence. Children's programs such as "Sesame Street" help to educate children on fundamental knowledge such as the alphabet and basic colors. News and current affairs programs help viewers stay up-to-date on the world around them.

  1. The characteristics of television

Television is an extremely important part of mass communication. Without television, a lot of people would probably not even be aware of what is going on in the outside world. Television reaches a wide audience of all ages at once. One can be used for entertainment purposes, for news to keep informed on events that are occurring around the globe, and for political statements that affect people's lives. The main purpose of television is advertising.

  1. The types of television

There are many types of television in the world. For instance, LCD (liquid crystal display) and LED (light-emitting diode screen) I have learned that there are different kinds of television according to the year or generation. When I was looking for the history of television, I found different kinds of amazing television. Television can be divided according to company. Different companies have different televisions. Television has different genres like cartoons, documentaries, history, drama, movies, news, and so on. [4]

  1. The importance of television

Nowadays, we can find at least one television in every household. We can't imagine the house without a television. It demonstrates the significance of television.Television is very important because it entertains, informs, and educates people. In my village, television is in every household. Whenever people came to rest at that time, they did so by watching television. Television not only wastes the time of people, but it also teaches them how to be happy and live a life. We can look at the variety of programs and valuable content on television to understand the importance of the medium. [5] There are many channels on television, like cartoons and sports for fun, the news to inform us, and advertisements to inform us about the current programs and other programs as well. The content of the television is very realistic and up-to-date. Television is very important because it can be used to enhance many important aspects of human life.

  1. critical evaluation of the television

Television is one of the tools of mass communication. Television has lots of programs. This can be profitable for the viewers or harmful for them. It is really an amazing set of audible and visual tools and a source of mass communication. It is really profitable for the viewers because it educates, informs, and entertains them in many ways. It educates the viewers by providing educational programs and informs them by providing the news. It entertains them by providing fun programs. It can be harmful for the viewer because it can waste people's time. And it can have a negative impact by providing unnecessary programs like violence programs. Therefore, it has two aspects: disadvantage and advantage. [6]

  • The advantage of television
  • Television keeps us informed of all current affairs in the world.
  • It entertains us.
  • Television helps us enrich our spiritual lives.
  • News, current events, and historical programming can help people become more aware of other cultures and people.
    • The disadvantage of television
  • It is a waste of time.
  • Watching too much television is not good for our health.
  • The viewers sometimes imitate violent, criminal, sexual, or other risky behavior they see on television and end up in trouble and in jail.
  1. The role of television in Christian families

The role of television in Christian families is very important. Why its role is very important is because every Christian family is using television; according to the present context, there is no household where there is no television. The use of the television depends on the Christina family. I mean, if the Christian family is strong in faith in Christ Jesus, They are using less television, and the spouse of the Christina family does not allow their children to watch more television. If they watch only Christian news and programs and other essential programs, many Christian families are using their time in prayer and reading the Bible in place of watching television. But some of the Christina families that I have seen are amazing; they are only focused on their work and rarely take care of their children. Here, I am not judging anyone, but I am trying to write really about the Christian families that I have seen in my life. They are rarely taking care of their children, which means they are allowing their children to watch television for a long time. As a result, they are losing the ability to pray and read God's word.

  1. Applications

As I have done this paper, I have learned many truths and facts about the television and the role of the television in Christian families. Television is the source of mass communication. By using television programs, we can reach many people and communicate with them. I have known that television can be the contemporary way to do ministry because everyone has their own television and watches many programs on television. Therefore, if we create Christian channels and programs, it will help us move on easily or extend our television ministry easily. In Nepal, there is new Christian television, but there are only Christian programs like "Message of Hope." Television is the best way to quickly learn about what is going on in the world. We can understand many things by watching television.

Conclusion

Television is one of the tools of mass communication. Television plays a big role in a Christian family because most of the family has television to show the programs, whether they are secular or Christian. We can't imagine that a Christian family doesn't have television. Television is one of the main sources of information for the whole population of the world, society, and nation. Television has a big role in any family. Every household has at least one television, which shows how important television's role is. In the present context, people feel like they are losing something if they do not have television or do not get the opportunity to watch television.
