My Quest for an E Reader

I’ve taken two tropical vacations recently. These are the types of vacations where I’m the most apt to read voraciously. Although I’m usually a paperback girl at home, I don’t want to waste my precious suitcase space to carry the many books I’ll go through on these types of vacations. But it’s also become abundantly clear I need to update my e Reader. Hence, my new quest to find the best e reader to buy.

Options have changed dramatically since the first Kindle came on the market in 2007. (Seriously, mine’s not that far behind, lol. I really barely use it!) Although many still think of Amazon as the only shop in town, there are plenty of other e readers on the market and even more reason why you might want to consider them. So, how do we choose the best e reader? Read below for some pros/cons to consider.

Kindle

There are many reasons to still go with Amazon’s tried and true Kindle. There are multiple options, some that don’t even break the bank and no one can dispute the MASSIVE kindle marketplace and Kindle Unlimited offerings. But, with abundance also comes a lack of quality control. Since beginning and now expanding the regular Stuff-the-Kindle days- free has also now become synonymous with “crap.”

You know I’m the first to defend Indie Authors who publish on Amazon. But there are many who unfortunately give self-publishing a bad name and Kindle Unlimited definitely highlights them because they’re cheap. Which means, readers, often only see the chaff instead of the gems.(PSA- Authors who plan to self-publish- please, please, get an editor!! No one can rely on self-editing alone! You WILL miss errors and look unprofessional. Please, please do NOT skip the professional editing step or you will fall into this category!)

The Kindles themselves are great tablets though. The Kindle Paperwhite has become the most popular option. The battery life is said to be phenomenal and they’ve also got multiple storage space options. It’s easy on the eyes with warm lighting options and also glare-resistant so that the old sunshine blurring the screen is no longer an issue. It’s also waterproof, so dropping it in the bath is no longer a catastrophe. You can also pair it with your Audible account so you can pick up where you left off on either the screen or your earbud when you’re on the go.

The Kindle Paperwhite is Amazon’s mid-range model of Kindle. They also have the Kindle, which is their most basic model of e reader. The Kindle Paperwhite is marketed as being the most lightweight option and eco-friendly using recycled materials. It’s still glare resistant, but not waterproof. It’s also distraction-free with no connection to email, social media or text messages.

Nook Reader

Barnes & Noble has really upped their game in terms of Amazon competition. For starters, if you’re an avid reader, you should be checking out their new membership programs. They have a free option which is basically just a stamps reward program. But they also have a new premium option that might be worthwhile if you use it strategically.

For starters, you get 10% Nook devices and accessories. You also get a free e book each month. And you also get 10% everything on BN.com and their physical stores. There are a variety of additional benefits as well. To see all of them check it out HERE.

I decided to become a member this year and so far I’ve been very pleased I did. The thing that honestly convinced me was the fact that my kids got benefits in addition to me for signing up. I was able to add each of them under membership and we all get free perks for our birthdays as well as discounts and exclusive offers. You also can access the free nook book each month on the B & N Nook app, so even if you don’t have a Nook Reader you can access this benefit!

As for the Nook Readers, they’re all comparably priced to Kindles, but pack a better deal when it comes to storage! Like Kindles, they have a range of offerings and and are marketed as distraction-free. Even their lowest range offering has the anti-glare feature and adaptive glow-light technology. They’re also all touch screen and have great reviews for battery life for all their models.

The biggest difference is their highest models have the waterproof feature and a jack for earbuds or bluetooth linking for audiobook listening. They also offer a better base model storage option for a better price than Kindles. The new Lenovo Tablet model will be coming out this May and will also have a camera and speakers! One thing to note though, if you’re adamant about your tablet being lightweight, the higher end Nook tablets are a bit heavier.

Overall, you can’t really go wrong with a Nook reader and Amazon better take note, Barnes and Noble is packing a decent punch for competition!

Kobo Reader

Kobo has become another big name on the block. Popular in Europe, the UK and Canada for awhile, Kobo US is new to the table. But, there’s a reason for the addictive cult following. For starters, many of the Kobo tablets provide an immersive experience. They have stylus pens to mark up and interact with the page. Almost ALL of the models are also waterproof and have audiobook linking capability. Kobo also rivals Kindle with their own flat fee Unlimited ebooks and audiobooks program, Kobo Plus.

Overall, Kobo is another valuable player to check out and consider.
