Sacrificing the biggest part of who they are for love is only the start…

Liam MacLeod, half Fae/half-human, only has wings in the Fae Realm. Over there, his magic is stronger, and he relishes the chance to navigate the skies, despite his family’s warnings of the dangers. His forbidden quest through the Faery Stones takes a perilous turn when he’s intercepted by ruthless Fae Warriors and left for dead.

An exiled and compassionate Fae healer, Sienna, discovers Liam and mistakes him for a banished winged Fae Warrior. Tending his wounds sparks an undeniable connection between them, defying the boundaries and laws of their worlds.

Liam is forbidden to stay in the Fae Realm, and Sienna’s destiny is tied to a dark, family secret of lost magic and a pact with an evil mage. Fulfilling Sienna’s lifelong desire for magic comes at a great cost she refuses to bear. Following Liam into the Human Realm would mean sacrificing her birthright.

Facing insurmountable odds, Liam and Sienna must forge a path where love triumphs, testing their willingness to sacrifice their deepest desires—his wings and her magic.

Excerpt From Highland Skies by C.A. Szarek

Liam couldn’t make out much since it was so late. The day and night cycle were the same in the Human and Fae Realms alike.

The doorway would be large enough to step through in a few heartbeats.

The Fae Realm.

Over there, his magic flowed more easily, as if it was constantly at the tip of his fingertips at the barest wish, instead of the normal firmness he had to put behind each command, each spellword, to get magic to obey. Over there, his powers were always right beneath the surface of his skin, ready for his beck and call, pushing back, making their presence known.

Liam called his magic to him now, trying to wear it like a cape, as it played with the swirling energy of the Faery Stones.

He put his palm out and conjured a small bright red, tweeting bird, with a wild vivid yellow comb and deep blue eyes. The bird was Fae, like nothing in the Human Realm. It was called a josta and known for its loud nuisance calls.

The waiting portal glimmered, compelling, summoning.

He tossed the bird into the opaque opening, waited two breaths, then stepped through behind it.

The portal snapped shut behind him, with a pop.

Liam’s conjured bird was nowhere in sight, although it was late and dark, so his visibility was limited.

It was quiet; maybe too quiet.

Where are the Fae Warriors?

The Faerie Stones on this side were not in a cave.

They’d been placed on a raised wooden platform, and the area consisted of a large open clearing in the middle of a thick forest full of maroon and blue-barked trees.

The Fae referred to the place as the Field of Light, because of the illumination the Stones themselves gave off, like their sisters in the Human Realm.

It wasn’t daylight radiant, but Liam could make out the area around the dais, as well as the stairs to dismount it.

The night was much warmer than in his realm, and the blue and orange grass swayed in a breeze his powers told him was magic-born.

His da had explained that the weather was controlled by the king’s mages, and kept mild, instead of being left to nature’s chaotic desires.

He needed to get off the platform so his invisibility spell would hold, keeping him hidden and safe, like before. He was foolish to stand there and question his stroke of luck that the Faery Stones had been left unguarded.

Liam scanned the area as he cleared the dais, moving out of the circle of light the crystals gave off.

He flapped his wings, testing them, smiling when the strong muscles above his back responded at his mental order, as if they hadn’t just rejoined his body. He wrapped the large iridescent appendages around his torso. Needed to reassure himself that they were back, and not something he’d imagined.

Liam hadn’t felt his wings reappear with any kind of noticeable surge of magic, but the power was there, all around him, thick in the air of this realm, for the taking.

He caressed the tip of one of his wings, and shivered at how normal it felt, just like any of the other skin of his body, despite being nearly transparent with colors dancing over the flesh, playing in the light the Stones emitted.

In the sunlight, Warrior wings were like living, moving prisms, all colors of the rainbow visible. He almost regretted the lateness of the day; he wanted to see the full spectrum.

His wings appeared fragile, but the sight was deceiving. Despite his lack of them in the Human Realm, they were strongly honed muscles that would carry him wherever he directed, as if he flew every day.

He wished he could.

Always.

Interview With C.A. Szarek

Q: Tell us about the genres you write. Why did you choose to go in that direction?

CAS: I always say I write everything. LOL I have series in epic fantasy romance, historical fantasy romance (Scottish Highlander Time Travels) and romantic suspense. But I also have some others I don’t have books out for, including paranormal romance and maybe even a YA romance. I just write what I feel. It didn’t happen on purpose.

Q: Tell us about the type of characters you love to write about.

CAS: Strong, sassy, sarcastic heroines and strong males. I like me an alpha male or two.

Q: Do you hide any “Easter eggs” secrets/truths in your books that only a few people will find?

CAS: I do! You might see a character/situation pop up that seems vague but if you read my books, you’ll know who I’m talking about. I love doing that!

Q: If you saw a doorway/portal in the middle of the forest, would you enter it?

CAS: For sure! I wouldn’t be able to help myself. Hopefully I am well prepared. LOL.

Q: What’s something about you – personality traits, habits, background, etc – that has been useful in your writing?

CAS: Writing is just so engrained for me I’m not sure. I have been a writer since I was very little—and before I wrote stories, I constantly told them in my head. I just think it’s a part of me. Writing is like breathing.
