This is going to be the best day of my life. Or at least the most financially responsible one.

With any luck, soon there will be at least one little tax deduction running around, securing my future as the CEO of the Winters Foundation.

Yes, it’s going to be a good day. I stare at my reflection in the mirror, straightening my silver bow tie and adjusting the lapels of my tux to lie flatter.

Someone knocks on the door to the hotel suite. Probably my brother, come to see if he can somehow snake me out of this marriage deal. My jaw tightens.

Still, family. The person outside knocks again, more loudly this time, nearly shaking the door frame. “Fuck, Cole, calm down,” I mutter as I cross to the door and pull it open.

A tornado of white satin and tulle sweeps past me into the room, ruffling my hair. Not Cole, then. My stomach roils like the waves in the Pacific Ocean. This cannot be good.

“Tris?” At my voice, my bride-to-be turns around, her perfectly-carved face accented with what has to be at least a thousand dollars of cosmetics. She is many things, Tris Parker, but she is beautiful.  Really. She has been called one of the Ten Most Beautiful Women in America by some magazine she shoved into my planner one time. Pilates-toned, perfectly tanned skin, bright blue eyes, and a dark sheaf of hair pulled into an elaborate updo accentuated with liberal rhinestones. They’re probably real diamonds.

As always, I wait for a feeling, any feeling, in my gut or my loins or literally anything, but nothing comes. Looking at Tris is like staring at a classically lovely fresco, and I’m not exactly an art buff. It doesn’t matter, right? She is perfect for me. Well educated, good family, interested in marriage. Relationships have been built on a lot less than a photogenic couple whose parents approve of their union.

“Tris? Isn’t it bad luck to see the bride in her wedding dress? You look gorgeous.”

She doesn’t answer. Not that this is particularly unusual, though typically when she doesn’t respond, it’s because she’s on her phone. “Is something wrong?”

The moment stretches between us, and the cold dread in the pit of my stomach deepens. All of my carefully made plans go up in a giant bonfire, complete with people cackling and carrying pitchforks. I should have known. I should have listened to my gut, telling me to want more, but as per usual I listened to my parents. Like that’s worked out so well for me before. Great going, Alaric. Cole will have a fucking field day over this.

At last she turns to me, but instead of tears or rage—which, I mean, obvious expectation— she looks tired. Tris never looks tired. She spends an obscene amount of time and money on treatments and creams to ensure she never, ever looks tired.

NC Ross is the spicy sweet pen name of Natalie Cross. She writes stories with diverse characters, enthusiastic consent, high steam, and a little humor.
She currently lives in Los Angeles with a sweet rescue pup who may resemble a chicken nugget (as per her eight-year-old), and her family.

Interview With NC Ross

Q: Hello, NC Ross! Can you start by telling us about your heroine? What inspired her quirks and struggles?

NCR: Asta is the woman I aspire to be. She’s confident, sex positive, and very organized. But she moved around a lot as a child, as she was the child of a diplomat, so she feels like relationships are always impermanent. As a former Domme, too, she is used to being the fantasy but has not yet met someone who wants the woman inside.

Q: Tell us about your hero. What motivates him?

NCR: Alaric is like American royalty. He’s from generational wealth and all the toxic masculinity that accompanies that. Part of his role has been to play at being a Billionaire Playboy, but that’s not who he is inside. He wants to do good things with his wealth, but he finds himself struggling against familial expectations. What he needs is someone to help him realize there is so much good inside of him.

Q: If your book was made into a movie, who would star in it?

NCR: Ooh, I love this question. There’s nothing like fantasy casting. Asta would be played by Nathalie Emmanuel (who was scene stealing as Missandei in “Game of Thrones”) and Alaric would be played by Henry Cavill.

Q: Why did you choose your setting?

NCR: I have always wanted to go to Thailand, but especially since having kids and the pandemic, it has not been in the cards. So this is part of my fantasy vacation planning.

Q: How many books have you published and which is your favorite?

NCR: This is actually the third book in the International Desires series, but I also publish mystery romance under the name of Natalie Cross. It’s so difficult to choose a favorite, but I have to say, Tied Up in Thailand might be it.

Q: What is your favorite food?

NCR: Anything with chocolate, please and thank you.
