The American Roommate Experiment Review (With A Few Spilled Spoilers)

Hii fellow romance readers, have you been waiting for The American Roommate Experiment too?

I’ve checked online bookstores and even contacted actual bookstores to know if one of the most anticipated books of 2022 is available in their bookstores and they said no, not yet.

So what did I do? I paid for the Kindle version because I’m really excited to read it. I couldn’t wait for the actual book to be available.

And guess what?? After I read the ebook version, the actual book is now available in actual bookstores here! Has this ever happened to you?

Moving on… here’s what I have to say about The American Roommate Experiment by Elena Armas.

About The Book (Real Quick)

Rosie Graham resigned from her well paid engineer job to focus on what she really loves to do: write romance books. She already has a published one that received attention under her pen name Rosalyn Sage. Rosie even got offered a book deal. After that, she signed the deal with the published and quit her job. But now that she has terrible writer’s block and the ceiling of her New York apartment collapses. Thankfully, Lina is away, she has an extra key to Lina’s studio apartment.

Rosie, however, is unaware that Lina has already allowed Lucas, her cousin and Rosie’s long time Instagram crush, access to her apartment. Lucas offers to let her stay with him and then he suggests an experiment to revive her creative inspiration and make her deadline: He’ll go on a series of test dates with her to spark her amorous inspiration. Lucas’s time in New York is limited, and six weeks might not be enough for either her or her deadline.

The American Roommate Experiment Review

I’m going to be honest with you. And with this honesty, I might include a few spoilers.

Here it goes.

This is a slooowww burn romance book. One of the slowest I’ve read. Don’t get me wrong, there’s already attraction between the characters from the moment they meet, it’s fun and flirty and all, but it takes a long time for something to really happen between them.

Spoiler: their first kiss is in chapter 22 but something spicy also happens before that in chapter 18. The novel is 32 chapters long plus Epilogue. See.. things happened second half of the story.

I still did enjoy the slow rising action part like the flirty banter between Rosie and Lucas, Rosie noticing Lucas’s flexed biceps, and Lucas indirectly (or kinda directly?) tells Rosie she’s beautiful.

Rate:

How many days did I read this?
In a day. My first time again to finish a book in a day but I would be happier if I really like the book.

To clarify, at first I was enjoying it that’s why I couldn’t put it down. By the middle, I just want to finish it for the sake of not reading it anymore the next day.

Narration?
First person narration, dual POV: Rosie and Lucas.

Did I enjoy the author’s writing?
Yes, I like Elena Armas’ writing. I also appreciated that Elena Armas wrote this using dual POV. I got to read what Lucas is thinking.

But I find The American Roommate Experiment too much for a slow burn romance book. Actually, I think there’s one event/happening/scene in the book that made it a little too much for me.

Spoiler: it’s when Rosie paid Taco’s ticket to fly from Spain to New York and Rosie took care of the Taco’s paperwork. Really?? Lucas is going back to Spain soon anyway and Rosie decides to fly over his dog and even pay for it?? I know this is just fiction but it’s too much.

It felt like Rosie and Lucas are competing who between them can make the most grandest of grand gesture.

What did I love about this book?
1. Rosie and Lucas hit it off easily. No drama just two people easily getting along. I like it.
2. The flirty and funny scenes

Is The American Roommate Experiment spicy?
Yes but The Spanish Love Deception is spicier for me.

How many spicy chapters?
If I counted correctly, five spicy chapters.

Will I reread this?
No.

Was this book worth my time and money?
Time, ok. Money, no. I’m a little bit thankful that I bought the ebook instead of the actual book. The ebook is more affordable and yet.. I’m not totally happy.

Do I recommend this book?
I’m torn.

Read this if you’re into slow burn. The type of slow burn where the main characters don’t kiss until the second half of the book. Don’t read this if you don’t like cheesy, too-much-happenings-for-a-romance-book book.

My 10 Favorite Scenes in The American Roommate Experiment

I shared my The Spanish Love Deception favorite scenes, so I’m also going to share my favorite flirty and funny scenes in this book.

1. When Rosie says to Lucas, “Who are you? Dr. Phil?”
“Is he handsome? Is that why I remind you of him?”

2. Lucas in a towel and says to Rosie:
“Enjoying the view?”

3. When Rosie and Lucas are in the vinyl store and Lucas is about to share a personal story…
“My had came to a halt just as I was lifting a record off a crate. My jaw might have dropped to the floor. I stuttered over the words that were not even leaving my mouth. Did that mean…? No. Impossible. It couldn’t be. There was no way. Lucas threw his head back and let out a laugh.”

4. When Lucas says to Rosie, “Whenever you’re done checking me out.”
Rosie: “I wasn’t checking you out.”
Lucas: “It’s okay with me, you know? I love the attention.” He paused. “And it’s good to know that you’re an ass woman.”
Rosie’s thoughts: “I was an ass woman. I really was.”

5. Rosie sits on Lucas’s lap.
“I tried to focus on the amazing food laid out in front of us instead of on the man whose lap I was currently sitting on.”

6. Lucas in a Victorian velvety tailcoat jacket and burgundy vest.
“And my attention was definitely happy to comply.”

7. When Rosie says Lucas has a groovy name.
“Did I just say that his name is groovy? Like a… a… disco ball? Or a seventies themed party?”

8. Lucas’s nose covered in flour.
“It’s not gone, is it?”
“I shook my head and finally let out a laugh.”

9. When Rosie calls Lucas handsome.
“Oh, dammit. That had totally slipped.”

10. When Lucas tells Rosie he doesn’t mind being used by beautiful women.
“My heart did the silliest, stupidest cartwheel.”

That’s it!

I hope my The American Roommate Experiment review makes any sense or is helpful.

Do you know any good romance comedy novels? Please recommend.
