Darcy Flynn has truly outdone herself with her first successful venture into teen, and young adult, time travel fiction. Flight Time exceeds every expectation, whisking readers away on an exciting, gripping, heart-warming, and adventure-filled story, with a wonderful satisfying feel-good ending.

Carefree and enthusiastic, sixteen-year-old Rylee Dean has grown up admiring and wondering about her grandfather, Jax, a brave pilot who disappeared on a flight in 1981. Rylee is adventurous and loves life. At her young age, she is training to be a pilot herself. She bravely hops into her grandpa’s old Cessna and takes it for a spin on her very first solo flight. All goes well. But when she lands, she isn’t in 2021 anymore, she’s gone back in time by 40 years. Riley is stunned and confused, but when she finally gets her bearings, she must seize the opportunity to find her grandfather and save his life before it’s too late. But the stakes are high—if she’s not careful, she could mess up a lot of things in the future, including her own birth.

Riley meets her grandfather, and ends up staying with him and his mother, and begins to get to know the grandfather she has heard and wondered about her whole life. Darcy Flynn is an outstanding writer and imaginative storyteller who can perfectly interlace the past with the present to create a splendid, captivating story written with vivid descriptions and clever details of this beautiful tale. The family, love and the magical journey and manner of how Riley and her grandfather found one another, and their growing heartwarming relationship brought tears to my eyes on more than one occasion. This book has it all. There is mystery, twists, turns, romance and surprises – I kept turning the pages while filled with anticipation as to what would happen next.

Darcy Flynn is an excellent writer across numerous genres; she certainly proves this with Flight Time. She skillfully brings together all the story’s aspects, like the technical elements of how time travel takes place. She either knows aviation or did a lot of deep research to write about flying a plane with all its aspects in the cockpit and everything else that’s involved. And as if Rylee’s exciting story wasn’t compelling enough, Flynn’s personal inspiration for the story is also intriguing. Her own uncle disappeared in flight, leaving behind his pregnant wife, just like Rylee’s grandfather. Rylee’s story is relatable and like what many people might feel about their relatives who passed away before they could meet them.

This is altogether a wonderful YA read that’ll have you rooting for Rylee and her grandfather throughout. You’ll be glued to the pages as Rylee journeys to the past and will be touched by her eagerness and sincerity. Book read, reviewed and recommended by Micah Giordonela for Artisan Book Reviews
