To the Survivors is a vessel for survivor’s stories in their own words.  Robert Uttaro handles these experiences with grace and an empathy that is moving, sensitive, and skillfully handled.  He’s included poems written by survivors or their friends as well as speeches and interviews.  Together with his own story, this book offers an education, an ally, and especially, an authenticity that only experience can provide.  In Robert’s own words, this book was written for anyone, but those who may be triggered by the survivor’s stories should be especially thoughtful about reading it with someone to ensure they are not being retriggered as they read.

Robert Uttaro felt a strong calling to support survivors who have experienced rape or sexual assault; this book is his story about the experiences he’s had at The Healing Place, an organization that provides support for sexual assault survivors.  The contents of this book, while difficult to read, are handled expertly and beautifully.  Robert has a gift for conveying other’s survivor’s stories with care and with grace while also providing relief for his readers with his own stories.  It’s clear he has a passion for helping others and that the roles he served at The Healing Place helped him just as much as he helped others.  I learned so much from his passion in this book, but I also learned about the financial and personal impact rape or sexual assault has on a victim.

While this topic is difficult to read about, especially when it’s a survivor’s own account, this book is necessary to read to understand that rape or sexual assault doesn’t impact any one gender, class, religious group, or age; and for those who have been impacted, certain kinds of support are more helpful than others. Robert Uttaro offers many of these examples through his own experiences in the hopes that his readers will benefit and understand.  This book is beautifully written and will help to promote healing, understanding and help to open lines of communication which is necessary in the therapeutic process.
