On Monday, a portion of Landmark Beach on Victoria Island, Lagos, was demolished to accommodate the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, Nigeria’s largest public infrastructure project to date. This happened despite concerns about potential job losses and livelihood impacts.

Landmark Africa, the owner of Landmark Beach on Victoria Island, lamented that six years of investment were undone in just six hours due to the demolition for the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project. X (formerly Twitter) conveyed the company’s dissatisfaction with the Federal Government’s demolition of its property in a post on Tuesday, while also expressing gratitude for public support.

The Minister of Works, Sen. Dave Umahi, explained that the demolition was necessary because the Landmark Centre was situated within the Federal Government’s Right-of-Way.

He emphasized that several structures would be impacted by the demolition and assured that compensation would be provided.

Umahi stated, “Therefore, with reverence to God, gratitude to God Almighty, and dedication to President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, particularly in our infrastructure development agenda, I am commencing this demolition.”

“The structure is situated in a right-of-way within the coastal corridor, which belongs to the Federal Government.”

“Before commencing the demolition of the landmark, I generously extended the grace period by an additional seven days and then another four days. However, the project was halted due to the lack of demolition.”

“And I want to commend the likes of Bolaji, incidentally from kilometre zero to four from what I’m seeing, he is the only one that is majorly affected. That’s the only infrastructure I can see that is affected.”
