Pros and Cons of Reading in Bed

Do you like to read in bed? I love reading under the cozy covers. Here are a few pros and cons of reading in bed that I’ve discovered. Are there any you can add to the list?

Pros:

  1. You’re cozy under the blankets.
  2. If you’re up late reading, it’s not a problem if you fall asleep (no waking up later in a weird position on the couch with an aching back).
  3. If you’re reading at night, you can put away the book at a good stopping place, instead of having to haul yourself up from the couch or a chair to go to bed (and then somehow start another chapter on your way to bed, further cutting into your sleep time).
  4. Reading at night can relax you and lessen stress, readying you for sleep.
  5. Reading can be a form of meditation or hypnosis that reduces anxiety.
  6. Reading can be part of a bedtime routine that makes falling asleep easier.
  7. Reading before bed can increase your quality of sleep.
  8. In the morning, you can just roll over, grab a book, and read. Best way to start a morning!

Cons:

  1. It’s easy to drop a book on your face.
  2. Reading in bed can encourage positions that create muscle aches.
  3. You often have to hold the book at an awkward angle, resulting in sore arms. (But, exercise, right? Maybe this one isn’t a con either.)
  4. You may just end up reading through the night. (Buuut, maybe that’s not a con?)
  5. If you’re reading on a screen, the blue light can make it more difficult for you to fall asleep by reducing the production of melatonin (but blue light filters can largely combat that).
  6. If you usually have trouble falling asleep, reading in bed can train your body not to fall asleep in bed, leading to even more trouble falling asleep.
  7. Or you might have the opposite problem, where you fall asleep right away if you try to read in bed.

Happy reading.
