[Book Review] Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros

Summary

Enter the brutal and elite world of a war college for dragon riders from USA Today bestselling author Rebecca Yarros

Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general—also known as her tough-as-talons mother—has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders.

But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away…because dragons don’t bond to “fragile” humans. They incinerate them.

With fewer dragons willing to bond than cadets, most would kill Violet to better their own chances of success. The rest would kill her just for being her mother’s daughter—like Xaden Riorson, the most powerful and ruthless wingleader in the Riders Quadrant.

She’ll need every edge her wits can give her just to see the next sunrise.

Yet, with every day that passes, the war outside grows more deadly, the kingdom’s protective wards are failing, and the death toll continues to rise. Even worse, Violet begins to suspect leadership is hiding a terrible secret.

Friends, enemies, lovers. Everyone at Basgiath War College has an agenda—because once you enter, there are only two ways out: graduate or die.

Review

I have procrastinated like f*#k when it came to reading this book. Like seriously it’s been out over two months, and I only bought a copy last week.

This book has literally been everywhere on my socials since its release in May and for me that’s scary… I in no way thought it could possible live up to its hype but I’ll put my hands up right now and admit I was so so wrong.

I liked Violet from the first page, she was easy to connect with and relatable, who wouldn’t want to spend there live surrounded by books? I also liked her sister Mira, who came across as such a badass. Dane who is Violets (so-called) best friend and want to say first crush, annoyed me from the very beginning! My god I don’t know how she didn’t punch him in the face (he gave me very strong Zayne vibes from White Hot Kiss). Xaden is our MMC, and I just knew he was going to be one of those guys who is tough on the outside but soft on the inside. I was intrigued by him from the very first encounter Violet has with him. And let’s not the forget the real stars of the show here – the f*#king DRAGONS! My god they were epic to say the least, also I was not expecting banter and humour from them.

I love that part in a story when two main characters first meet and the chemistry is sizzling even when they still hate it each other – which was very much the case here, it just ramped up the anticipated of their relationship development to a high for me and I was so there for it!  I just really loved watching Violet and Xaden fall in love it was very satisfying! Also, the spice on point! Some peeps probably would have wanted more but I was more than fine with what it was.

The story itself was a breath of fresh air, I loved the dragons and all the politics that seem to be going on that I don’t think we’ve even scratched the surface of. I only have one teeny tiny complaint and that’s the world building could have been a bit more detailed and intricate, but I understand why it isn’t. That ending though….. WTF!!! I did not see that coming at all, but I’m so exited for November!

Overall, this was easily (I expect like many) one of my favourites reads this year. I highly recommend. Now I am off the listen to the audible version of this because I miss the dragons already!

My Rating: 5/5
