Hearing My Way cheerfully explains Hearing loss to children. This line, in particular, starts the book out strong. Not every child knows about hearing aids, but they know about glasses, so what better way to explain hearing aids to them?

For those who don’t understand hearing loss

My Hearing, My Way will help others understand what hearing loss is, especially for children such as my son, who is 3, who wouldn’t understand why someone would wear a hearing device. As he starts school, he will encounter others who “look” different. My Hearing, My Way is a book that starts the conversation of how children with hearing aids may look different than him. I want to explain in simple terms that those with hearing devices can listen to the same sounds he does. It is amazing that such a helpful tool exists so that people can listen to the day-to-day sounds we all take for granted: a bird chirping, the wind blowing, an airplane up in the sky.

Bright and positive illustrations

The book starts out gray and illuminates with color as you begin to see how each child makes their hearing devices their own. The pictures add to the lesson to look past hearing devices and see the person for who they are. Each kid’s personality shines through with how they decorate their hearing aids. A boy adds superhero stickers to his processors, something I never knew what they were called. This prompted me to look into what else a hearing aid is comprised of. Knowing nothing about the technology of a hearing device prompted me to research how they work. The same goes for showing the different styles of devices. One girl has different headbands to hold hers in place while others decorate theirs like earnings.

All the children featured in the book are smiling and proud to be who they are. I really enjoyed those illustrations as I am sure children with hearing devices may be self-conscious about them. The whole story about decorating hearing aids will, in my opinion, encourage readers with hearing aids to do the same.

I found My Hearing, My Way positive and informative read

Even if you don’t know someone with hearing loss, it is a read to help children prepare for meeting someone who might. It also teaches the importance of everyone having their own way of living a “normal” life with or without medical devices. Included in the first page of the story is Dr. Armas’s website, LittleListners.org where you can learn more about hearing loss. I encourage each reader to check it out!
