The Ring of Destiny is a classic middle school book. Three girls sit in class when the main character, Millie, bumps into the cutest boy in school. After Millie gushes to her friends about her crush, she then visits an antique shop. A Ring at the front counter catches her eye, and the shopkeeper warns her. It is the ring of destiny, and the person with it has more power than you’d think.

Despite the shopkeeper’s warning, Millie buys the ring and shows her friends its power. Millie wishes for something not everyone would think to wish for. But for these three girls, it is unbelievable. But as the shopkeeper warned her, things spiral out of control quickly for Millie and the ring of destiny.

I loved how down-to-earth The Ring of Destiny is despite being a fantasy novel.

The three girls are relatable in a way that all middle schoolers would enjoy reading about. We’ve all had that first crush, and in this awkward time of life, it can be hard to figure out how to manage a romantic relationship alongside friendships. The story moves quickly as an adult reading it, but for a middle schooler, it moves at a good pace. The dialogue speaks for itself. It sets the reader up for how close these girls are as friends. What their life was like way before coming into possession of the ring.

The novel is perfectly structured with a turning point that keeps the reader engaged. You jump from one scene to the next as Millie scrambles to find the solution to a well-deserved ending. Each person exhibits a characteristic that is important for middle schoolers to possess or has an influence on their day-to-day life.

The Ring of Destiny is an engaging story that middle schoolers would enjoy.

For me, The Ring of Destiny reminded me of Judy Blume books. I could see The Ring of Destiny becoming a series of stories where Millie and her friends experience both real-world and fantasy adventures.
