When God asked Noah to build an ark and gather two of every kind of animal, Noah didn’t know what he was in for. From mischievous monkeys to graceful giraffes and not forgetting the sneaky snakes and everything in between, the Floating Zoo is full of a fantastic array of creatures that will capture your imagination.

I have a three-year-old who is starting to understand why we pray and go to church on Sundays. I’ve been looking for books to teach him the basics of Christianity, as I learned in school. Questions like the reason we celebrate Christmas and Easter. In addition to those stories, I’d like him to understand other levels of the bible. Noah’s Ark included.

Fun-loving foxes won’t go to bed.
Stinky skunks play games instead.

The Floating Zoo is a fun and creative way to teach the story of Noah’s Ark.

A critical part of a children’s book, especially for young audiences, is rhyming. The books my son and his classmates enjoy the most are the ones that are sing-songy. The poetic rhyming in The Floating Zoo worked for me. Shiloh Moyo created a scene in a few words, which is hard. Yet, the writing is flawless.

Chaos!

Having a dog and a cat, I know what can happen when you put two different species in the same room. Add a world flood to it, and there is utter chaos. The Floating Zoo brings a new perspective of Noah’s Ark from the animals. From years of studies, we know what putting a lion next to a zebra would conclude. So, how did Noah maintain his composure when you have to give it to God? The answer to this question is one you get to discuss with your child when reading the story.

The illustrations caught my son’s attention

My son loved the images of the animals. The cartoons are colorful, and the facial expressions emphasize the accompanying text. It was as if we were watching one of his favorite cartoons! The animals had such hilarious personalities, and each one’s relationship with Noah explained the chaos of what would have been on the honest Noah’s Arch. The bright colors jumped off the page and were beautifully done.

Who would I recommend this to

If you’re not a believer, even as an adult, this story would make you want to learn more about the story and Christianity itself. If you are a believer and like to share the bible with others, this is also a fun way of presenting such an iconic and essential story in the bible.
