Alternate Histories (2019)

Main cast: Rebecca Riedy (Computer Voice), Dieter Jansen (Young Hitler), Scott Whyte (Future Nazi), and Chris Cox (Male Backgound)
Directors: Victor Maldonaldo and Alfredo Torres

In Alternate Histories, the episode treats itself like an app and the viewer is the audience fiddling with the app in question.

The app is called Multiversity, which has nothing to do with that thing Facebook has re-branded itself as or the latest fad in superhero movies to justify all mistakes in casting choices and bad scripts. No, it is an app that allows people a glimpse into what will happen when a pivotal moment in Human History is altered.

The most popular choice by app users is the death of Hitler before he became the boss of Germany and got World War 2 surging forth, so this episode proceeds to present the ways human history will change with each of six possible ways for that fellow to die before his time. Each death is increasingly absurd, naturally.

Now, like most episodes in Love, Death & Robots, this is a visually impressive episode, and it’s the main reason why I give this episode two oogies.

However, the scenarios presented here are punchlines that repeatedly miss their mark. I know they’re supposed to be humorous, but I don’t even chuckle once. The jokes fall flat, and the homages to various famous genre movies and tropes don’t land because the whole thing feels like items on a “Oh, I’m show the audience that I’m very clever!” list being ticked off one by one. ‘

Sure, watch this because it looks good, but the episode is like cotton candy. It may be sweet and nice on the palate at first, but it’s all empty calories and far from filling at the end of the day.
