Double Take Synopsis

Lake City Heroes: Book #1

Detective James Holton has been honorably discharged from the Army Criminal Investigation Division due to wounds sustained when an IED blew up near him. Now with the Lake City Police Department, he’s rooming with his good buddy and partner, Cole, while he figures out his family dynamics.

Physician Assistant Lainie Jackson is eighteen months out from an attempted murder perpetrated by her ex, which ended when she managed to grab the weapon and shoot him. When he appears to have survived and is back to finish the job he started, Lainie insists it’s not possible. But someone keeps trying to kill her, and she keeps seeing his face.

Together, Lainie and James must work together to find out who, exactly, is after her and why he wants her dead. And failure is not an option.

USA Today bestselling author Lynette Eason will leave you breathless with this fast-paced first book in a brand-new series.

Book Review

I was in the mood for an audiobook that would be (1) really easy to get drawn into, and (2) had a simple enough structure that I could listen in short stints without too much back-tracking required. And, Lynette Eason’s latest romantic suspense novel Double Take, delivered on both of those scores.

Lainie and James are both really down-to-earth characters with, quite refreshingly, nothing but good intentions. Each though, are scarred by traumatic experiences in their past, and so have a fair amount of emotional baggage to work through in parallel with trying to stay alive.

While the mystery underpinning Double Take kept me guessing, the chronological narrative is easy to follow and swiftly paced. Eason fills any down-time between thrilling action sequences with either cat-and-mouse psychological suspense or romantic tension between her lead characters.

While I’d known Lynette Eason was a routine bestseller, I had not realised she wrote ‘Christian’ and ‘clean’ fiction. While some references to faith were a little overt for my personal taste, in the sense that they broke my suspenseful engagement at times… but I am sure many would find these elements value-adding.

Another first for me… Lauren Pedersen as audio narrator. Her slightly corporate instructor style and pacing took me a chapter or two to get accustomed to, but I did, and her vocal clarity was never in question.

Ultimately, I found Double Take in audio a compelling mental diversion (exactly what I was after) and my heart was warmed by these leads and the selfless characters they surround themselves with.

In the next instalment of this Lake City Heroes series (due for release later this year), another pairing of first responders from this friendship group is set to take the spotlight.

My Rating

Story 3.5 / 5 ; The Writing 3.5 / 5
