Behind all the glitz and glamour of stardom prevails a dark side that only the celebrities know of. And nothing shook the nation more than the untimely death of these popular celebrities. In India, the stars are looked upon as role models, idols and some are even worshipped for their onscreen glory. So, when the news of these popular celebrities committing Suicide hit the channels, fans and the film industry were left shocked and devastated. Gone too soon and that too at the peak of their career, their passing raised a lot of questions that will remain unanswered forever. Missed by their fans, and etched in the history of Bollywood for their stupendous contribution to cinema, here are 7 Bollywood celebrities who committed suicide and left us too soon:

1. Jiah Khan

Dusky and gorgeous, Jiah Khan rose to fame with his gutsy role opposite none other than Amitabh Bachchan in Nishabd. People lauded her acting skills and her power to hold the screen against the superstar. Besides this, she also went on to act in several South Indian and Bollywood films that faired moderately at the box office. Born in New York and raised in London, the star left her fans devasted by committing suicide on 3rd June 2013. However, her death ended up creating a stir in the film industry as she exposed the dark side of Bollywood and her failed relationship with actor Suraj Pancholi.

2. Kushal Punjabi

When the news of Kushal Punjabi’s death hit the social platforms, people thought it was a hoax until it was confirmed by his close friends. A young and dynamic star who had appeared in several films like Kaal, Lakshya, Salaam-E-Ishq, De Dhana Dan Goal and more, he was a celebrated face on the small screen as well. So, his untimely death came as a shock to both the entertainment industries.

3. Pratyusha Banerjee

A well-known face on the small screen, her claim to fame was her stint as Anandi in one of the highest-rated shows, Balika Vadhu on Colors channel. Her role made her an overnight sensation amongst tv viewers. Post this, she went to appear in several tv series and found popularity again by starring in India’s biggest reality show Big Boss. An actress with exceptional talent, the nation was shocked to learn of her suicide. A huge loss to the television industry, the reason why she took such a drastic step will remain unknown forever.

4. Divya Bharti

An enigmatic beauty all of 19, she was already a star in the entertainment industry. Known for her versatility and vivacity, she appeared in several Bollywood and Tollywood hits during her reign in the 90s. However, on the fateful night of 5th April 1993, she fell to her death after losing her balance while standing on the ledge of the window. Though several critics cried foul play and labelled it as suicide, her father, however, denied all the claims.

5. Manmohan Desai

Known as the ‘miracle man’ in the Hindi film industry who went to deliver 13 stupendous hits of all-time in the 60s, 70s, and 80s, Manmohan Desai had the skill to churn superhit out of a flop script. Such was his power of storytelling that he never worked with a structured script but made a film with only one thought in his head – how would his audience want to see it? The man knew his viewers and he knew exactly how to extract a gem out of his actors. However, he gave up filming after few debacles in the late 80s and on 1st March 1994, the Hindi film fraternity learned of his death. Though there’s a lot of mystery around his untimely demise, some claimed he fell from his balcony while others blamed his failure and framed the whole scene as a suicide. The truth, however, remains unknown.

6. Silk Smitha

The first and only sex symbol of Indian cinema – the men wanted her, the women envied her, Silk Smitha was an icon of erotica in the entertainment industry. Well-known for her bold roles and how effortlessly she could add the oomph factor to her character on screen, she was a sensation to behold. Born as Vijayalakshmi Vadlapati, Silk who got her stage name from her first film, went on to act in 450 films in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Hindi and more. However, she soon found herself in debt after donning the role of a producer and on 23rd September 1996, she was found hanging in her apartment in Chennai. 

7. Guru Dutt

Did you know Guru Dutt’s film Pyaasa is included in Time’s All-Time 100 Best Movies? The famed Indian director, producer, and actor was known for making lyrical and artistic films that had a huge fan following not only in India but in Germany, France, and Japan as well. The name behind some of the superhit classics in the 50s and 60s such as Pyaasa, Kaagaz Ke Phool, Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam, and Chaudhvin Ka Chand, met his untimely death on 10th October 1964. Dutt was found dead at home after consuming alcohol with sleeping pills. Though suicide was overruled by his son, who claimed his father died of an accidental overdose, Guru Dutt had attempted suicide twice earlier. So, whether his death was a suicide or not remains a mystery, even today.

It’s heart-breaking to list that Bollywood has lost some exceptionally talented stars so far. These seven popular celebrities left us too soon and today, we can only remember them and witness their magic once again through the films and series they left behind as their legacies. They are gone, but they will never be forgotten.
