Thought of the Day: What I'd like to do with this blog is to grow a community of Readers who trust my blog posts enough (in terms of quality and consistency) to give my published works a try.

I'm not at Amazon, and so I can't get reviews there. Same with Smashwords and its associated retailers. And so readers are generally in the dark about my books, at least from a public-perspective vantage point.

That really can't be helped. To publish at Amazon is to become a slave to Amazon and devalue my hard work to the point where it's basically worthless. To publish at Smashwords is to tacitly approve of Smashwords and its grotesque emphasis on "romance" (read: women's porn) while ignoring every other genre, simply because "romance" (read: bump-and-grind lit for women) is publishing's one and only cash cow.

People my entire life have yelled at me (many times literally) to just accept the status quo and deal with it. The thing is, though: it's my life. It's desperately, absurdly finite. And so I'm going to, to the greatest degree I am able, do things my way, be it diet, exercise, grooming, eating, sleeping, thinking, talking, pooping, and publishing. Getting readers really isn't all that difficult. I could rejoin Kindle Direct Publishing, put my works up for free, then go to BookBub and shell out several hundred dollars for advertising, then sit back and wait for the download stats to spike.

I'll get readers that way, sure. But not good readers. Not devoted readers. Not a community of readers.

Those are all very difficult to come by. But in the end, they are the only ones worth pursuing.
