The October Wrap

Happy Halloween! It’s the very final day of October, and that means I’m here with the wrap up post. It also means it’s the start of seasonal depression season. My seasonal depression has already hit, and last week was a slog to get through. Today, I’m sitting at my desk next to my SAD lamp, vitamin B12, and vitamin D3. I am determined to make it through the winter!

In terms of Write Through the Night, we had a huge influx of Book reviews this month. It seems like it was nearly all we published! If you’re looking for a new book to read this winter, we have all of the reviews for you. We’ve already started planning our end-of-year posts, so get ready for a huge influx of Best-Of lists in the months to come!

Books I Read

The Queer Liberation Library has launched, meaning that anyone can request a library card for an entirely queer collection of e-books and audiobooks. If you haven’t requested a card already, you should do that! Most of these books, though, came from Libro.fm, which has been coming through clutch with the influencer ALC picks.

  • Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch, by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman
  • Iris Kelly Doesn’t Date, by Ashley Herring Blake
  • The Writing Retreat, by Julia Bartz
  • We Have Always Been Here: A Queer Muslim Memoir, by Samra Habib
  • Beyond the Gender Binary, by Alok Vaid-Menon
  • 10 Things That Never Happened, by Alexis Hall

Movies I Watched

I decided to educate myself on Woodstock ’99 this month, and of the two documentaries I watched the HBO one was by far superior. Other than that, it was intriguing to hear more about Michelle Carter now that I’m an adult that’s less susceptible to “evil bitch” narratives, and a massive letdown to watch Jenny’s Wedding, a film ostensibly starring lesbian Katherine Heigl and actually starring a bunch of straight characters.

  • Labyrinth (3.5 stars)
  • Jenny’s Wedding (2 stars)
  • I Love You, Now Die: The Commonwealth v Michelle Carter
  • Woodstock 99: Peace, Love, and Rage (4.5 stars)
  • Trainwreck: Woodstock ’99
  • Happy Ending (4 stars)

Reviews You Can Use

Sometimes, we publish reviews long after we actually consume the material. Below is a list of all of the reviews we published this month.

  • The Search for Us, by Susan Azim Boyer
