13 Movies To Watch in Theaters This Fall

As the weather grows colder in most of the world, my desire to watch a Movie increases exponentially. There’s just something so great about going on a walk in the crisp fall air and ending up at a movie theater, greeted by the scent of freshly popped popcorn and an odd conglomerate of microwavable “dinners” that nonetheless taste delicious. Of course, as I write this article (late, as always) it is 90 degrees outside, and so that utopia is not within reach. Nonetheless, there’s some incredible movies coming out and I can’t wait to get my AMC pass and head to the theaters.

As always, a reminder that SAG and WGA are on strike for living wages and acceptable working conditions. The studios are refusing to meet their demands or even renegotiate, and so it’s more important than ever that we stand alongside the creatives behind each and every one of these movies and support them in getting what they deserve.

Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe

Release Date: September 8th, 2023

Key Cast: Max Pelayo, Reese Gonzales

Genre: Drama / Romance

As hard as it is to believe, I still haven’t gotten around to reading the book! This adaption is by Lin-Manuel Miranda, and I think that pretty much speaks for itself. Throughout the film set in the 1980s, Aristotle and Dante will “explore their friendship while struggling with racial and ethnic identity, sexuality and family relationships”

My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3

Release Date: September 8th, 2023

Key Cast: Lainie Kazan, Nia Vardalos

Genre: Comedy / Romance

I cannot for the life of me remember if I watched My Big Fat Greek Wedding 1 or 2, but we’re back with a 3rd rendition! This is the first of many many sequels/franchise installments coming out this fall, and of all of them it’ll probably be the best (in my humble opinion). In this movie, members of the family reunite in Greece once again.

The Expendables 4

Release Date: September 22nd, 2023

Key Cast: Sylvester Stallone, Megan Fox, Jason Statham

Genre: Action / Adventure

While I’m not a huge fan of “The Expendables” as a franchise, I’m a huge fan of hottie Megan Fox, and so I may just watch this movie anyways. As always, it seems, the world’s last line of defense is The Expendables, and they’re here to save the day.

The Kill Room

Release Date: September 29th, 2023

Key Cast: Uma Thurman, Samuel L Jackson, Maya Hawke, Joe Manganiello

Genre: Mystery

When a hit man teams up with an art dealer, a run of the mill money laundering scheme turns into an “avant-guarde sensation”. I haven’t seen much advertising for this movie yet, but purely based on the Cast and the premise I’m sure it’s going to be a hilarious watch well worth your time. Plus, it’s one hour and 38 minutes long, which is just about the perfect length for a movie.

Saw X

Release Date: September 29th, 2023

Key Cast: Tobin Bell, Shawnee Smith, Costas Mandylor

Genre: Horror / Thriller

You all know the drill. An infamous serial killer sets a series of increasingly deranged traps to lure his victims to their deaths. This time, Jigsaw works his magic on a group of con artists who think they’re traveling to Mexico for a medical procedure.

Foe

Release Date: October 6th, 2023

Key Cast: Saoirse Ronan, Paul Mescal

Genre: Drama / Thriller

This one’s for the bisexuals, and I specifically mean the bisexual women who are deeply in love with Phoebe Bridgers and followed her breakup with actor Paul Mescal fervently. The film, which takes place in the not-so-distant future, stars Mescal and Ronan as a couple as they overcome strangers, dystopia, and marriage.

The Exorcist: Believer

Release Date: October 6th, 2023

Key Cast: Leslie Odom Jr, Ellen Burstyn, Jason Blum, Ann Dowd

Genre: Horror

The only thing I know about the latest edition of “The Exorcist” series is that the date was moved to a week earlier after Taylor Swift announced her eras tour because The Exorcist: Believer didn’t want the opening weekend competition. This franchise is always well done, and I’m sure this film won’t disappiont if you’re looking for something spooky to watch in time for Halloween.

Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour

Release Date: October 13th, 2023

Key Cast: Taylor Swift

Genre: Concert Film

I am not a huge fan of concert films. I just have no real desire to sit down and watch a concert in my own home or in a theater, and I tend to only play them in the background if I want music to listen to. HOWEVER as with all things Taylor Swift does, this is sure to be an event, and it will undoubtedly be a great and affordable way to scream and dance with a bunch of Swifties in a public place.

What Happens Later

Release Date: October 13th, 2023

Key Cast: Meg Ryan, David Duchovny

Genre: Romance / Comedy

When ex-lovers reuinte at an airport, they have no choice but to discuss their past and what may happen now that they have a chance to rekindle the romance. Starring THE Meg Ryan, this movie is sure to be absolutely incredible. The romcom is well and truly back when Ryan starts acting in them again.

Ordinary Angels

Release Date: October 13th, 2023

Key Cast: Hilary Swank, Alan Ritchson

Genre: Drama

This movie is going to be heartwrenchingly sad. A hairdresser finds her purpose after she meets a widowed father who is working to care for his daughters, one of whom is critically ill. With the daughter in need of a liver transplant, the hairdresser rallies the community to help this family. To be honest, this sounds like more of a Hallmark movie than one distributed by Lionsgate, but what do I know!

Killers of the Flower Moon

Release Date: October 20th, 2023

Key Cast: Brendan Fraser, Leonardo DiCaprio, Martin Scorsese

Genre: Drama / Crime / Mystery

I would love if someone could tell me whether or not this movie was made with the input of actual members of the Osage tribe, because from what I can tell of the cast, it wasn’t! Nonetheless, Killers of the Flower Moon, a book, will be adapted into a movie of the same name this fall. The movie details the true story of the murder of tribe members after they found oil on their land. It’s devastatingly sad, and a powerful story if told well.

The Marvels

Release Date: November 10th, 2023

Key Cast: Brie Larson, Samuel L Jackson, Teyonah Parris, Imam Vellani

Genre: Action / Adventure / Sci-Fi

Captain Marvel is back once again, and now that she has her power, she has to deal with the consequences. I may not be a fan of Marvel but I’m also not a fan of the way Brie Larson gets treated by fans of the series, and so I hope this movie is extremely good and puts everyone in their place!

The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes

Release Date: November 17th, 2023

Key Cast: Rachel Zegler, Tom Blyth, Hunter Schafer, Peter Dinklage, Viola Davis

Genre: Action / Drama

This is going to be an incredibly long film, clicking in at 2 hours and 45 minutes, but I cannot wait nonetheless. The star studded cast takes on the prequel to The Hunger Games series, wherein a young President Snow mentors District 12 tribute Lucy Gray Baird in one of the first ever Games. The casting for this seems absolutely perfect, and I truly cannot wait to watch.
