2023 Emmy Nominations and Predictions

This piece was written during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Without the labor of the writers and actors currently on strike, the shows being covered here wouldn’t exist.

The Emmy nominations have been released, and that means it’s time for me to put out my predictions list! There are so many Emmy categories, and so many people nominated for each one, so I only participated in judging the major categories—best series, best actor, and best actress, for each type of show. That’s still a whole lot of categories, and a whole lot of outstanding talent! So much so, that this post is two pages, because it quite simply did not fit nicely into one.

The Emmys will air live on September 18th, 2023, pending the successful SAG negotiations

Outstanding Drama Series

  • Andor
  • Better Call Saul
  • The Crown
  • House of the Dragon
  • The Last of Us
  • Succession
  • The White Lotus
  • Yellowjackets

My Predicted Winner: Succession

I’d be shocked if Succession didn’t win this year. It’s in it’s final season and was one of the most excellently put together shows I’ve seen in a long time.

Outstanding Comedy Series

  • Abbott Elementary
  • Barry
  • The Bear
  • Jury Duty
  • The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
  • Only Murders in the Building
  • Ted Lasso
  • Wednesday

My Predicted Winner: Abbott Elementary

I want Abbott Elementary to win this category so badly! It deserves it! I think The Bear Season 2 will end up winning next year since it’s a fake comedy, so it’s Abbott‘s year this year. I’m also surprised Jury Duty is in this category and not a reality TV series category, but alas!

Outstanding Limited Series or Anthology

  • Beef
  • Dahmer- Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story
  • Daisy Jones & the Six
  • Fleishman Is in Trouble
  • Obi-Wan Kenobi

My Predicted Winner: Dahmer

I’m deeply upset with a lot of nominations in this category, namely because the people behind the productions are not great. Beef actors fell under controversy this year, resulting in me stopping the show after one episode, and Dahmer was created without the consent of the victim’s families. Still, the latter will probably win.

Outstanding TV Movie

  • Dolly Parton’s Mountain Magic Christmas
  • Fire Island
  • Hocus Pocus 2
  • Prey
  • Weird: The Al Yankovic Story

My Predicted Winner: Fire Island

To be honest, Fire Island is the only movie I’ve even heard of on this list, but it was one of my favorite 2022 movies, so I hope it wins.

Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama

  • Jeff Bridges, The Old Man
  • Brian Cox, Succession
  • Keiran Culkin, Succession
  • Bob Odenkirk, Better Call Saul
  • Pedro Pascal, The Last of Us
  • Jeremy Strong, Succession

My Predicted Winner: Jeremy Strong

I really hope Jeremy Strong wins this! He deserves it! I’m shocked that Brian Cox was even nominated, and disappointed that it’ll further split the Succession votes. While I haven’t seen The Last of Us yet, I love Pedro Pascal so I wouldn’t be upset if he won either.

Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy

  • Bill Hader, Barry
  • Jason Segel, Shrinking
  • Martin Short, Only Murders in the Building
  • Jason Sudeikis, Ted Lasso
  • Jeremy Allen White, The Bear

My Predicted Winner: Bill Hader

I don’t really know much about these actors or shows, but I know Barry is remarkably well done so I assume that will win!

Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited / TV Movie

  • Taron Egerton, Black Bird
  • Kumail Nanjiani, Welcome to Chippendales
  • Evan Peters, Dahmer
  • Daniel Radcliffe, Weird: The Al Yankovic Story
  • Michael Shannon, George & Tammy
  • Steven Yeun, Beef

My Predicted Winner: Evan Peters

I haven’t watched any of these, and quite simply I don’t want to!

Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama

  • Sharon Horgan, Bad Sisters
  • Melanie Lynskey, Yellowjackets
  • Elisabeth Moss, The Handmaid’s Tale
  • Bella Ramsey, The Last of Us
  • Keri Russell, The Diplomat
  • Sarah Snook, Succession

My Predicted Winner: Sarah Snook

I love so many of these actors who got nominated! I would honestly be happy if Lynskey or Snook won, but I assume it will go to Snook.

Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy

  • Christina Applegate, Dead to Me
  • Rachel Brosnahan, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
  • Quinta Brunson, Abbott Elementary
  • Natasha Lyonne, Poker Face
  • Jenna Ortega, Wednesday

My Predicted Winner: Quinta Brunson

I’m honestly hoping Applegate wins, because I think she deserves it as a person for her efforts in Dead To Me, but in terms of straight up best performance that has to go to Quinta Brunson. She’s just incredible!

Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited / TV Movie

  • Lizzy Caplan, Fleishman Is in Trouble
  • Jessica Chastain, George & Tammy
  • Dominique Fishback, Swarm
  • Riley Keough, Daisy Jones & The Six
  • Kathryn Hahn, Tiny Beautiful Things
  • Ali Wong, Beef

My Predicted Winner: Ali Wong

I hope Ali Wong doesn’t win because of the way she stood up for rape talk by her fellow castmate, but I think she likely will. I’m happy that Riley Keough got nominated though, she deserves it!
