Fear Street Trilogy: The Horror Buff’s Dream and the Slashers’ Worst Nightmare

This piece was written during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Without the labor of the writers and actors currently on strike, the trilogy being covered here wouldn’t exist.

Hold on tight, Horror fans, because the Fear Street Trilogy (2021) is here to drag you kicking and screaming through a blood-soaked marathon of terror, murder, and enough plot twists to give you whiplash. I’ve finally seen this trilogy, so get ready for my chaotic, honest review.

The Fear Street trilogy is a series of interconnected horror films based on R.L. Stine’s novels. It consists of Fear Street Part One: 1994, Fear Street Part Two: 1978, and Fear Street Part Three: 1666. The movies explore a curse responsible for a series of killings in the town of Shadyside.  The first movie features the present day discovery of the curse, and the next two serve as prequels , revealing more about the curse and the dark history of Shadyside. The trilogy explores themes of generational trauma, supernatural forces, and the struggle to break the curse’s hold on the town, connecting the narratives across time periods to create an immersive horror experience.

First in the lineup is Fear Street: 1994. Picture this: a bunch of angsty teenagers in baggy flannel shirts face off against a cursed town. The characters are sassy and their witty banter will have you laughing between screams. Just make sure you’re not too attached to your favorite ’90s jam because it might end up as the soundtrack to someone’s demise.

Moving on to Fear Street: 1978. Welcome to Camp Nightwing, where hormones rage. This installment takes us back to the groovy era of bell-bottoms and killer summer camps. Get ready for all of the classic slasher movie tropes: the final girl, false leads, and massive amounts of gore. Amidst all the blood-soaked chaos, a beautiful lesbian love story blossoms in the most unexpected places. These ladies know how to heat up a cabin in the woods, and it’s safe to say that even Jason Voorhees would be impressed.

Last but not least, we have Fear Street: 1666. Brace yourselves for a time-traveling adventure that takes us to the heart of witch-hunting madness. As the tale unfolds, we witness a forbidden love that flourishes in the face of intolerance and superstition. It’s like watching a forbidden Shakespearean romance, but with more demonic curses.

Overall, the Fear Street Trilogy is a bloody buffet of horror goodness serving up scares, laughs, and a generous portion of heart. It’s like a rollercoaster ride that starts slow, picks up speed, and leaves you breathless by the end. The movies pay homage to classic slasher flicks while injecting their own twisted charm.

Grab your popcorn and a loved one (for comfort, of course), and prepare for a scream-inducing marathon. The Fear Street Trilogy is a wickedly fun ride that will leave you gasping for breath, praying for survival, and perhaps even longing for a bit of supernatural romance in your own life. Just remember, not every summer fling ends with a blood-soaked knife in hand. But hey, that’s what makes the Fear Street Trilogy so delightfully terrifying!

Rating: Four out of five stars because all it took to end a 300-year-old curse was an angry lesbian fighting for her girlfriend. Men are nothing.
