Luckily for us, Neville Ying was kind enough to answer a few questions as the tour was getting started so that we can give you a sneak peek into the mind of the creator of  SERVANT LEADER IN ACTION.

Outskirts Press: Tell us a little bit about SERVANT LEADER IN ACTION. What is it about?

Neville: The book is about the importance and value of Servant Leadership in transforming organizations to achieve sustainability and resilience in an uncertain and unpredictable future due to the simultaneous impact of disruptive forces. Four disruptive forces are considered in the book: Exponential technological changes, pandemics such as COVID-19 and its variants, the impact of climate change and global warming, and the fight for supremacy by countries across the globe in the areas of economic power and nuclear energy.

The book emphasizes the use of use three important servant leadership competencies in transforming organizations:
• Strategic Thinking
• Conversational Competencies and
• Emotional Intelligence Competencies

The book stresses the point that in the process of transforming organizations for sustainability and resilience, the three servant leadership competencies must be applied in conjunction with four critical success factors:

EMPOWERING: building people’s creative and decision-making capacity in the organizations being served.

RISK-TAKING: establishing strategies for two future scenarios—success and failure.

FINANCING: making organizations financially self-sufficient, thus giving them greater freedom to develop creative strategies and innovative actions.

PRESERVING: maintaining core values such as honesty, fair play, excellence in performance and customer satisfaction while responding to the imperative for radical changes dictated by disruptive forces.

Outskirts Press: Why did you decide to write this story?

Neville: Having served successfully over 50 organizations and transformational projects at the national, regional and international levels, I want to share the lessons I learnt from applying servant leadership in the transformative process with seasoned and emerging leaders who are seeking to transform their organizations to achieve sustainability and resilience for a future which is unpredictable and uncertain.

The book stresses the importance of how the servant leader combines and integrates strategic thinking, emotional intelligence and conversational competencies with key elements of transformational leadership, such as inspirational motivation, intellectual stimulation and empathy in empowering people in the organization.
