5 honest reviews of my favourite restaurants in Guwahati

I have been at Guwahati for two long years, long enough to explore every nook and corner of Guwahati. Guwahati is the city of beautiful amalgamations ,one side there is spirituality and culture and other side is filled with urban fancies and luxuries. You can not compare Guwahati to any metro city but Guwahati is a well developed ancient city which has its own charm. We will strictly stick to Guwahati hotels. Guwahati has many multicuisine restaurants, five star hotels like Taj Vivanta and Radisson Blu. There are also many local dhabas and cafes to boast about. It is simply not possible to talk about all the restaurant in one single post so I will stick to giving honest reviews of five of my favourite restaurants in Guwahati.

Mocha 4/5

Situated : Ground Floor, Anil Plaza 2, GS Road | Bhangagarh, Guwahati, India

Mocha tops the chart of my favourite restaurants which is basically a cafe and you can visit this beautiful, almost gothic restaurant  for some lip smacking snacks and shakes. The ferrero rocher shake is my favourite which is served in such a huge mug that one glass of it is sufficient to quench not only your thirst but also your hunger. The Mezze plate is another popular dish which is basically a bread platter served with various sauces and mayonnaise . There also put cocktail samosa in that platter alon with some baked papad. Their Sandwiches,Pizza and fries are also worth trying. They also serve good chinese. And Since it is a cafe they don’t serve Indian dishes like roti daal chawal but if you have a craving you can order their Khichdi which I must say is amazing to eat and you must try Mocha khichdi at least once. Since I am a  vegetarian I have never tried their non vegetarian cuisines but I have heard how good they are from friends especially about Tex-Mex Chicken served with noodles and veggies. You also get hot beverages ,nice coffee, coolers and pastries in MOcha. and trust me each of the dish is worth trying. The great thing about Mocha cafe in Guwahati is they also have a bar where you can order variety of cocktails. I also like the Mocha aesthetics and ambience a lot, it’s not typical of hotel decor, the jute swings are my favourite.

The yellow Chilli 3/5

situated: Ground Floor, Anil Plaza 2, GS Road | Bhangagarh, Guwahati, India

The yellow Chilli is a Sanjeev Kapoor restaurant. They are a vegetarian friendly restaurant but serve non vegetarian Food also. They also offer a wide range of cuisines comprising Chinese, Indian, Middle Eastern, Afghani dishes.  Their nawabi biryani is a must try so is Gulab e gulkand. Peshawari roti, dal makhani is also good too. Their kebab platter is a crowd favourite. Their paneer dishes had delighted me always and I remember eating them during my pregnancy the quality of food is really good. It is a great family restaurants. Only thing I dislike about yellow chilli is ambience. Though they have huge space but hardly any decoration and I simply give zero points for aesthetics. Many a time the restaurant stinks as well and AC does not work in that space so it’s quite hot. But yes food is the best. You must visit the restaurant located at a prime location which is main shopping area of Guwahati and see it for yourself.

Borluit 2/5

Situated: Baihata Rd, Amingaon Guwahati 781101, India

What I like about Borluit is its exclusivity to offer North eastern cuisine and its authenticity. One simple sweet restaurant situated at a Highway provide with a refreshing touch. At that location it is the best restaurant (more like a dhaba). It is a small restaurant and feels surreal because of its northeastern touches. More than the food I have always liked the ambience. A cute leather Rhino (the identity of Assam)  welcomes you at the gate. There are brass urlis filled with water and flower at the entrance. The typical of North eastern hats and gamcha and items made of bamboo can also be found around. They serve you food in enormous steel plates and brass tumblers. Though the food is pretty simple and dont have much to offer to food lovers but the simplicity of it just like ghar ka khana makes it special especially when you halt out of your vehicle may be this ‘ghar ka khana’ is what you look for. They offer Assamese thali both vegetarian and nonvegetarian food are served. They also have fish to offer. Apart from their traditional thali they also serve separate dishes like paneer sabzi pulao daal etc typical of North indian restaurants. Borluit restaurant is also close to IIT Guwahati

TAJ vivanta

Situated:Nikita Complex, GS Rd Khanapara, Guwahati

Taj Vivanta Guwahati is one of the few five star hotels in Guwahati area and perhaps one of the few in North East . i have been to other Taj properties in different parts of the country and Taj vivanta Guwahati is certainly one of the finest in the category. Sprawled across an enormous space and made in all white it makes you awestruck of its magnanimity. There is also a dome at the front which adds nice touch to the whole aura. i have also been to radisson Blu Guwahati but Taj beats it hands down. Their buffet is simply enorousmos. They serve almost all the cuisines from continental, chinese,North Indian,Mexican to more. There is also enormous section of desserts and icecreams. It is also equipped with coffee shop, Chinese Japanese South East Asian restaurant, Bar, Gym, Spa, Swimming Pool and other facilities which are best in business of a five star hotel. If you are looking for a luxurious stay while travelling to Guwahati Assam you must book a suite there.

Rang De Basanti Urban Dhaba

Situated : 1st Floor, Basudev Commercial Complex, Christian Basti, Guwahati

I have included Rang De Basanti Urban Dhaba only for its ambience. Place is exactly how an urban Dhaba should be; Quirky and fun. A delightful setup, platform like seats, milestone mentioning various Indian towns.  There’s also a model tractor placed right in between the restaurant, which is a great attraction for kids. The menu is innovative and is authentically very interesting and different ambiance. In addition, the food presentation is also very different and amazing. They have all day long ala carte menu. The lassi and the mutton sheekh kebab is good, i have heard.  The welcome drinks and mouth fresheners feel good. The different foods cuisines are presented in a different manner like Rice in “Bhayankar Kadi Chawal” are presented in ball form after frying a little bit. The prices are on the higher side but the service and the food is worth it. Good for a family outing for a lunch or dinner. Must visit restaurant with friends and family.
