NIGERIAN LEADERS AND THEIR BIOGRAPHIES (1960- TILL DATE )

1. Alh. Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa (Born: December, died: janary15,1966) Abubakar, nicknamed the Golden Voice of Africa because of his oratory, was Born in Bauchi. In 1957, he was elected the Chief Minister prior to Nigeria's Independence.

Position Held: First Prime Minister of Nigeria (October 1960 - January 15,1966).He was assassinated on January 15, 1966, in a bloody coup in d'état led by Major Gen. Chukwuma Kaduna Nzeogwu.


2. Late Rt. Hon. Dr. Nnamdi Benjamin Azikiwe a.k.a. Zik of Africa (Born: November16,1904), (Died: May 11,1996) Zik, a native of Onitsha, Anambra State, was born in Zungeru, Niger State.

Position(s) Held: The first Indigenous Governor-General of Nigeria

(October 1,1960-October 1.1963). The First President of Nigeria (ceremonial) (October1, 1963-January 15,1966). He died at the age of 92.


3. Late Major Gen. Johnson Umunnakwe Thomas Aguiyi IronsI Born: March 3, 1924.Died: July 29, 1966.He was born in Umuahia-Ibeku, Abia State.

Position Held: (C) The first Military Head of State. (January 15,1966-July 29,1966). He was overthrown and killed in a counter coup by a group of armies' officers who revolted against his government.



4. Gen. Yakubu Gowan Borm: October 19, 1933. Gowon hails from Luri ,Kanke LG A., Plateau State. He joined the Nigerian Army in 1954.

Position Held: Military Head of State (29th July, 1966 -29th July 1975). His administration experienced Nigerian Civil War that lasted for 30 months (1967 -1970). On 5th May 1967, he divided Nigeria into 12 States from the 4(four) former regions. He was overthrown (when he was attending OAU Summit in Kampala) in a military coup led by Murtala Mohammed.

5. Late Gen. Murtala Ramat Muhammed (Born: November 8, 1938.Died: February13,1976). He was, born in Kurawa Quarters of Kano City.

Position Held: The 3rd Military Head of State, (July 29, 1975 -February 13, 1976). In his short reign, he reformed the Civil Service; created 7 more States, set a Committee on a new FCT and among other things, set the agenda for a return to civilian rule. He was assassinated in an abortive coup led by Col. Buka Suka Dimka. (The coup was folled because the plotters missed Obasanjo-(Mohammed's 2nd-in-command).

6. Gen. Olusegun Mathew Okikiola Aremu Obasanjo (Born: 5 March 1937). Obasanjo, the successor of Murtala Mohammed, was born in Abeokuta. He was enlisted in Nigerian Army in 1958.

Position Held: 4th Military Head of State (13 February 1976- 1 October 1979). He was distinguished by handing over power to democratically elected civilians in 1979.


7. Alhaji Shehu Usman Aliyu Shagari (Borm: 29 February 1925) Shagari, a Northen of Fulani extraction, was born in Sokoto. He served as Federal Minister In different capades.

Position Held: First Executive President of Nigeria (October 1,1979-December31,1983). He was overthrown by Maj. Gen- Muhammadu Buhari.

8. Gen- Muhammadu Buhari (Born: December 17,1942) Buhari, a native of Daura in Katsina State was the Military Govenor of North-Eastern State (August 1975-March 1976).

Position Held:5th Military Head of State (December 31,1983-August 27,1985) He introduced public campaign War Against Indiscipline (WAI)He was overthrown in a coup d'état by his Chief of Army Staff (Gen. Ibrahim Babangida).


9. Gen- Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida (Born: August 17,1941) Babangida, popularly known as IBB-the "Political Maradona" and "Evil Genius" was born in Minna, Niger State. He joined the Nigerian Army on 10 December 1962.

Position Held: 6th Military President of Nigeria (27th August 1985-27th August 1993). He stepped aside for Interim National Government after he "annulled" the election purported to be won by M.K.O. Abiola on June 12,1993.

10.Chief Ernest Adegunle Oladeinde Shonekan(Borm:9th May,1936) Shanokan ,a British-trained lawyer was born in Lagos.

Position Held: Head of the Interim National Government (27th August,1993-17thNovember, 1993). He was overthrown by Gen. Sani Abacha.


11.Late General Sani Abacha (Born:20th September,1943) Died:8th3une,1998(aged:55) Abacha, a Kanuri (Borno) by tribe was born and brought up in Kano. He was a very courageous soldier, commissioned in 1963, was involved in all successful coups (from the 1966 Counter Coup to his own Palace Coup in 1993).

Position Held:7th Military Head of State (17 November 1993-8th June, 1998). His administration was accused of several human rights abuses-Execution of the Ogoni Activists, Jailing of M,K.O .Abiola ,etc.

12.General Abdulsalami A. Abubakar (Born: June 13,1942) Abubakar, a Gwari man (ethnic group) in Niger State. He was commissioned as Airforce Personnel (1963-1967) and later in Nigerian Army (1967-1999).

Position Held:8th Military Head of State (9th June 1998 -29th May 1999). In his administration, Nigeria adopted her new constitution on May 5,1999. On May 29,1999, he graciously transferred power to a Civilian President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo.

13.Chief Olusegun Obasanjo (Born: 5 March 1937). Obasanjo was the 4thMilitary Head of State who was later jailed by Abacha, and he rose from the prison to Presidency again.

Position Held:2nd Executive President of Nigeria (May 29, 1999 -May 29,2007).His administration attracted GSM operators to Nigeria. He successfully handed over to another Civilian, Umaru Musa Yar' Adua.

14.Late Alhaji Umaru Musa Yar' Adua Born: 16th August 1951. Died:5th May 2010.

(Aged:59 Years). He was born into an aristocratic Fulani family in Katsina State.

Position(s) Held:3rd Executive President of Nigeria (29th May 2007-5th May 2010) Katsina State Governor (29th May 1999-29th May 2007). President of Nigeria. He was succeeded by the Vice-President, Goodluck Jonathan.

15.Dr. Goodluck Azikiwe Ebele Jonathan (Born: 20 November,1957). Dr. Goodluck A.E. Jonathan was born in Otueke in Ogbia L.G.A. of the then Eastern Region, later Rivers, now Bayelsa.

position(s) Held:4th Executive President of Nigeria (May 29, 2011, to 2015). Acting president (February 9, 2010 - May 6, 2010), In 2015, he lost the presidential election to Major Gen. Buhari.


16. President Muhammadu Buhari May 29, 2015- (Born:17th December 1942) Hometown /State: Daura/Katsina He was the military Head of State from December 311983-August 27, 1985.He defeated the incumbent president, Goodluck Jonathan in 2015.Change is the mantra of his political party APC, which re-nominated him as candidate for2019 election
