Maribel Zavala Struck and Killed by Suspected Hit-and-Run Driver Ernesto Rios in Laredo

 
LAREDO, TX (May 22, 2024) – The Laredo Police Department identified 44-year-old Maribel Zavala who died in a hit-and-run on East Saunders Street on May 5.
 
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the crash happened around 4:49 AM. Based on a report, Zavala was in a wheelchair attempting to cross the street at the time of the incident.
 
Due to unknown circumstances, a Chevy Traverse came and hit her at 2101 East Saunders Street. Subsequently, it fled the scene without rendering aid to the victim.
 
As a result, Zabala suffered grave injuries in the crash. Emergency crews transported her to the hospital, where she later died.
 
LPD sought the community’s help locating the vehicle by sharing multiple photos from security footage. Officers later arrested and charged 38-year-old Ernesto Cortes Rios with an accident involving death which is a second-degree felony.
 
This crash remains under investigation, and no further information is available.
