Yester Paz-Zavala Arrested after Las Vegas Hit-and-Run on Sandhill Road and Hawaii Avenue
LAS VEGAS, NV (May 14, 2024) — Authorities arrested 20-year-old Yester Paz-Zavala after a hit-and-run on Sunday, May 5.
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said the accident took place on Sandhill Road and Hawaii Avenue near Charleston Boulevard at around 1:56 a.m.
LVMPD report said a 2012 Chevrolet Cruze LS driven by Paz-Zavala traveled north on South Sandhill Road approaching East Hawaii Avenue.
At the same time, a 63-year-old homeless pedestrian sleeps inside a makeshift tent in a desert area on the east side of South Sandhill Road. Then the Chevrolet went off-road right and struck the pedestrian.
After the crash, police said the vehicle stopped inside a business just north of the crash site. Several uninvolved motorists advised Paz-Zavala and a passenger of the car to wait for the authorities.
However, the Chevrolet driver and his front passenger went back to the car and fled the scene. They abandoned the vehicle nearby and then fled on foot.
LVMPD later said they found Paz-Zavala hours later. They arrested him and he faces charges of hit-and-run and failure to render aid.
Responding officers transported the pedestrian to UMC’s Trauma Unit in critical condition.
