Mecca Berkins Arrested after Fatal Gig Harbor Crash on Highway 16
GIG HARBOR, WA (October 19, 2023) – Officers arrested 54-year-old Mecca Berkins of Federal Way after a fatal car crash on Highway 16 on October 6.
According to the Washington State Patrol, the collision happened at Rosedale Street around 1:00 AM. Based on a report, Berkins was allegedly traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes of the highway at the time of the crash.
At the same time, a 30-year-old woman from Shelton was traveling eastbound in the correct lane. At that point, Berkin’s car hit the 30-year-old woman’s car head-on. Her car then came to a stop on the right shoulder facing the wrong way. The 30-year-old woman’s car came to a stop on the median.
As a result, the 30-year-old woman died at the scene. Officials did not yet release her name, pending kin notification.
Officers charged Berkin with vehicular homicide.
At this point, an investigation into the case is ongoing. In addition, no other details are available.
