Heriberto Cantu Killed in Tulia Accident on Highway 86 near FM 2301

 
TULIA, TX (August 30, 2023) — A 35-year-old man identified as Heriberto Cantu, of Rio Grande, died in a crash on Wednesday, August 23.
 
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, a 2012 Ford F250 towing a flatbed trailer traveled westbound on Highway 86 at around 5:40 p.m.
 
At the same time, a 2008 Chevrolet Silverado moved north on FM 2301. It approached a stop sign at the intersection with Highway 86.
 
The driver of the Silverado did not yield to the stop sign on FM 2301. It then struck the F250 on the driver’s side. The impact caused it and the towed trailer to leave the roadway and then flip over.
 
DPS said the impact ejected Cantu, who is the driver in the Silverado. Swisher County Justice of the Peace Elsa Carrasco pronounced him dead.
 
Four people in the F250 suffered injuries. The driver, 21-year-old Zachary Reyes, of Happy, and a passenger, 33-year-old Danny Anderson, of Amarillo, received treatment at the scene for minor injuries. Paramedics transported two other passengers, 23-year-old Cody West, of Amarillo, and 26-year-old Seth Schulte, of Canyon, to Swisher Memorial with minor injuries.
 
The Texas Highway Patrol Troopers handle the ongoing investigation of the crash.
