The first name on this list of Shrek characters is the man, or ogre, himself: Shrek. Shrek is the titular character of the franchise. Canadian actor Mike Myers voiced Shrek throughout the film series, while Brian d’Arcy James played the role in Shrek the Musical. 

His name comes from the German word, “Schreck”, which means “fright” or “terror”. It’s a fitting name for a green ogre who initially comes off as scary and hostile. Shrek is known for his bald head, long ears, and protruding belly.

In the first film, Shrek is a recluse who happily lives alone in his swamp. As the film progresses, he learns to enjoy the company of other people and becomes more welcoming.

In 2010, Shrek received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in Los Angeles. In the same year, Shrek also ranked 15th in Entertainment Weekly’s list of “100 Greatest Characters of the Last 20 Years”.

King Arthur Pendragon, or simply “Artie”, is an awkward teenage boy and Fiona’s only living cousin. He has blonde hair and a small frame. Aside from Shrek, he is the only heir to the kingdom of Far Far Away.

His father sent him to Worcestershire Academy when he was a little boy. Since then, Artie never saw his father again. Later on, he and Shrek bond over how their fathers left them at a young age. This causes them to become great friends, and Shrek inspires Artie to become the new king.

Unlike most Shrek characters, Artie doesn’t have any other appearances. He only appears in the third movie, and nobody else mentions him in the fourth film. This is most likely because Justin Timberlake, who voiced the role, could not return for the fourth film because of scheduling issues.

Big Bad Wolf

Three Little Pigs

The Three Little Pigs are among Shrek’s friends. They are supporting characters who appear in all the Shrek films.

As their name suggests, the Three Little Pigs are a group of three brothers who are pigs. They have pink skin, and they walk on two feet. Each brother has a distinct hat to tell them apart, namely a hard hat, a straw hat, and a train conductor’s hat. However, the films never reveal their names.

In the classic fairytale, the pigs and the wolf were enemies. However, as Shrek characters, the pigs and Wolfie are best friends. In the Halloween TV special, Scared Shrekless (2010), Wolfie mentions the Three Little Pigs are his ride home.

Three Blind Mice

Unlike the Three Little Pigs, the Three Blind Mice’s names are mentioned in the film. Their names are Forder, Gorder, and Horder.

They are among Shrek’s friends, and they help guard Shrek and Fiona’s swamp in the second film. The Three Blind Mice also travel to Far Far Away alongside other characters to help free Shrek.

Dronkeys

There are six Dronkeys, whose names are Eclair, Peanut, Coco, Bananas, Parfait, and Debbie. Five of them are named after Donkey’s favorite food, while Debbie’s name comes from Dragon’s mother.

The Dronkeys have little screen time, and they don’t have any lines either. However, many fans still love how cute and unique the dragon-donkey hybrids are.

Farkle, Fergus, and Felicia

Queen Lillian

There’s no shortage of royalty among Shrek characters. Another example is Queen Lillian. She is the mother of Princess Fiona and the queen of Far Far Away. She has blonde hair and wears a pink dress and a golden tiara.

While she wasn’t particularly enthusiastic about Fiona and Shrek’s marriage, Queen Lillian still accepted Shrek as her son-in-law. Later on, however, she grows to love and accept Shrek into her family. At the news of Fiona’s pregnancy, she is genuinely excited to become a grandmother.

In Shrek 2, King Harold makes a deal with the Fairy Godmother to wed Fiona to Prince Charming. Because of this, he hires Puss In Boots to assassinate Shrek. At some point, he almost gives Fiona a love potion to force her to fall in love with Charming.

Overcome with guilt, however, King Harold betrays the Fairy Godmother. He jumps in front of the fairy’s magic spell, and it turns him back into a frog. It turns out that he used to be a frog prince.

Doris

Doris is one of the most memorable Shrek characters ever. She is a masculine bartender at the Poison Apple, a tavern in Far Far Away.

Doris has a tall, masculine build with a deep voice. She wears heavy makeup and a purple dress. Her character design references a drag queen, but some fans also believe she is a trans woman.

Either way, Doris is one of Fiona’s best friends. At the beginning of Shrek 2 (2004), however, she is on the side of the antagonists. She recommends Puss In Boots to King Harold, and she also has a crush on Prince Charming.

Snow White

Sleeping Beauty

In Shrek 2 (2004), Fiona’s diary mentions how she couldn’t go to any of Beauty’s sleepovers because of her ogre curse. In Shrek the Third (2007), however, the two become good friends.

Like most Shrek characters, Sleeping Beauty is an eccentric version of her namesake. She is a narcoleptic who falls asleep at the most random moments. However, she is a gentle princess and a kind friend to Fiona.

Merlin

Merlin is an old wizard who was formerly Artie’s magic teacher. He is a short man with a bald head but a long white beard. He wears circular spectacles and a blue wizard hat and a matching blue robe.

In Shrek the Third (2007), Shrek, Artie, Donkey, and Puss accidentally crash their ship into an island. On that island, they run into Merlin, who no longer teaches magic. His spells usually fail, but he tries his best to help Artie and the gang.

Unfortunately, Merlin accidentally causes Donkey and Puss to swap bodies. He, however, successfully turns them back to normal at the end of the film.

Rumpelstiltskin

Rumpelstiltskin is an evil conman and the principal antagonist of the fourth Shrek film. He is also known as “Rumpel” or “Mr. Stiltskin”. As a dwarf, Rumpel is short with an enormous head and pointy ears. He has red hair, which matches his brown clothes.

Rumpel does not have magic like the Fairy Godmother, but he can make “magical transactions”. His magical transactions refer to deals or contracts that can warp time and reality. Rumpel’s deals are usually scams that benefit only him.

In Shrek Forever After (2010), Rumpelstiltskin scams Shrek by making a deal with him. This alters the lives of all the Shrek characters, and it creates an alternate reality where Shrek and Fiona never met.

Jack and Jill

Many people know Jack and Jill from the famous nursery rhyme, “Jack and Jill”. However, the characters from the nursery rhyme differ ‌from the Shrek characters.

In Puss In Boots (2011), Jack and Jill are the villains. They are not children as most adaptations of the nursery rhyme would depict. Instead, they are an adult couple, with pointy chins, stocky builds, and brutish attitudes.

Thelonious

Thelonious is Lord Farquaad’s henchman. He wears black clothes, including a black mask that covers his head and neck. As an obedient lackey, he does everything his boss commands. In the first film, he tortures Gingy when Farquaad asks him to.

After Lord Farquaad’s demise, Thelonious joins Shrek’s side. He even attends Shrek and Fiona’s wedding, where he coos at their first kiss as a married couple.

Compared to other Shrek characters, Thelonious doesn’t have a major role. However, fans find themselves intrigued by the masked henchman. Some fans even developed a theory that Thelonious was also an ogre because he and Shrek had similar builds.

Rapunzel

There are several adaptations of the classic fairytale, “Rapunzel”. In most of them, Rapunzel is a beautiful princess with long, blonde hair. However, in Shrek the Third (2007), that’s as far as the similarities go.

Unlike her namesake, Rapunzel is a villain who is greedy and deceitful. She pretends to be friends with Fiona and the other princesses, but she leads them right to Prince Charming. Prince Charming is actually her boyfriend, and they want to take over Far Far Away.

At the end of the film, Gingy climbs up Rapunzel’s hair, but his weight causes the hair to slip from her head. It is then revealed that Rapunzel is actually bald and only wears a wig. Like other evil Shrek characters, Rapunzel faces a bitter loss.

Captain Hook

Captain Hook is a popular villain from J. M. Barrie’s play Peter Pan; or, the Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up. In the play, he is Peter Pan’s archenemy. He is a pirate captain with an iron hook for a hand.

In the Shrek films, he is also an antagonist. He only plays a minor role in the second film. In the third film, however, Hook plays a bigger role as one of Prince Charming’s top henchmen. Hook and his pirate crew attack Shrek’s team to prevent them from bringing home Artie.

At the end of the film, however, Hook gives up the life of a villain. Like most Shrek characters, he learns to follow his dream and becomes a florist.

Cyclops

Another villain from the Shrek films is Cyclops. Cyclops is a large man with one eye and a monobrow. In Shrek 2, he works as the bouncer for the Poison Apple. In Shrek the Third, he helps Prince Charming conquer Far Far Away.

His scary appearance contrasts with his gentle personality. Despite being a villain, he doesn’t like violence at all. He is a family man who cares deeply for his daughter.

Unlike most Shrek characters, he does not reference a character from a fairytale or nursery rhyme. Instead, Cyclops is a reference to the mythological creature with the same name. A cyclops is a one-eyed creature from Greek and Roman mythology. In one Greek story, three cyclopes brothers forged the thunderbolt for Zeus.

Mabel the Ugly Stepsister

Mabel the Ugly Stepsister, or simply “Mabel”, is a minor character in the Shrek films. She is one of Cinderella’s evil stepsisters, along with Doris. She and Doris both have deep voices and heavy makeup. However, Mabel is short, and she has a round face.

In Shrek the Third (2007), she becomes the bartender after Doris leaves and befriends Shrek and Fiona. Like her sister, she also has a crush on Prince Charming. She helps him take over the kingdom alongside other evil Shrek characters.

At the end of Shrek the Third, however, she reconciles with Doris. She befriends Shrek and Fiona, and she attends the Ogre Babies’ birthday party.

Brogan

In Shrek Forever After (2010), new Shrek characters emerged because of an alternate reality. One example is Brogan. Brogan is the second-in-command of the Ogre Resistance.

Like Shrek, he is an ogre, but he is taller, buffer, and also more handsome. He wears an orange shirt with black pants and a rope belt. As a kind and strong man, Brogan wants to help ogres as much as he can.

Originally, the writers envisioned Brogan as the Prince Charming. Brogan would be Fiona’s love interest, who shared the same curse as her.

Cookie the Ogre

Cookie the Ogre is another character from the alternate world in Shrek Forever After (2010). He is the chef for the Ogre Resistance. Aside from feeding the other ogres, he also joins them in battle.

His choice of weapon is his food. In the final battle, he catapults his chimichanga dish at Rumpelstiltskin and his goons.

Cookie wears a chef hat and has a piercing on one of his ears. He has a goatee which he accessorizes with garlic.

Gretched

One of the strongest Shrek characters is Gretched. Gretched is a female ogre and member of the Ogre Resistance. Among their ranks, she is a powerful soldier who looks and acts tough.

She contrasts with Fiona as the only other female ogre in the film. Unlike Fiona, Gretched is not delicate or pretty. Her body is large and stocky, but she has longer hair than male ogres.

Humpty Dumpty

Jack and Jill aren’t the only Shrek characters based on nursery rhymes. Humpty Dumpty is another. Humpty Alexander Dumpty, or simply “Humpty Dumpty”, is a white egg with limbs. His head and body are one, but he has arms and legs. He wears a brown hat and a matching suit.

Humpty Dumpty is actually the childhood best friend of Puss. However, he grew jealous of Puss’ fame, and he tried to frame him as a thief.

In Puss in Boots (2011), he initially plays the role of the villain. However, he has a change of heart later on and helps Puss. At the end of the film, Humpty falls from a bridge and cracks his shell. This references his original nursery rhyme.

Kitty Softpaws

Kitty Softpaws is one of the main characters in Puss in Boots. Kitty is a beautiful black tuxedo cat. She has a white chest, white paws, and bright blue eyes. She wears brown boots and also carries a long dagger with her on her belt.

Like Puss, Kitty also uses her charm to her advantage. At first, she is on Humpty Dumpty’s side and poses as a friend to Puss to trick him. However, she falls in love with Puss and decides to help him instead.

Fans were excited to see one of the most beloved Shrek characters finally have his love interest. They loved their dynamic and their sword fights too.
