Chelsea sack Thomas Tuchel as manager after poor start to season

A club statement read: “On behalf of everyone at Chelsea FC, the club would like to place on record its gratitude to Thomas and his staff for all their efforts during their time with the club. Thomas will rightly have a place in Chelsea’s history after winning the Champions League, the Super Cup and Club World Cup in his time here.

“As the new ownership group reaches 100 days since taking over the club, and as it continues its hard work to take the club forward, the new owners believe it is the right time to make this transition.

“Chelsea’s coaching staff will take charge of the team for training and the preparation of our upcoming matches as the club moves swiftly to appoint a new head coach.

“There will be no further comment until a new head coach appointment is made.”

Tuchel was appointed as Frank Lampard’s successor in January 2021 and guided Chelsea to their second Champions League crown in May that year.

However, Tuchel then came under intense pressure as the public face of the club as Abramovich was effectively forced into selling Chelsea after the U.K. government imposed sanctions relating to his alleged ties to Russia President Vladimir Putin.

Tuchel steered the club through a difficult period on the pitch as the Boehly/Clearlake consortium negotiated their purchase of the club.

However, disagreements emerged over the club’s transfer strategy, and sources have suggested Boehly became concerned that Tuchel’s messages were not getting through to the players, many of whom had become frustrated at his approach.

The defeat in Zagreb was their third consecutive away loss, the first time that had happened under Tuchel. The club lie sixth in the Premier League, having won three of their opening six matches.

Speaking after losing in Zagreb, Tuchel said: “Of course I’m frustrated; there’s too much to analyse, I’m a part of it, and we are clearly not where we need to be. At the moment everything is missing.”

Tuchel was promoted into the role after acting as a youth coach at Mainz for the previous 12 months, during which his team had won the Under 19 Bundesliga.

The club executive, Christian Heidel, stated that Tuchel’s perfectionism, going as far as to absorb pitch repair before a match against Olympiacos, contributed to his eventual appointment.

The structure of the squad was seen in Tuchel’s tactical access at the club, as despite having technically inferior players, he taught them to utilize long diffusion and focus on pressing off the ball.

Typically overloading one part of the opposition half in order to make less space to create counter-attacking situations, as harsh high-pressure would make chances by dispossessing or forcing mistakes from the opposition. Tuchel led Mainz to a ninth-place finish in Bundesliga during his first season as manager.

In the following season, his team had a perfect start to the season, winning seven matches in their first seven, including an away victory over Bayern Munich.

Tuchel’s team eventually placed fifth in the 2010-11 season and qualified for the third-qualifying round of the 2011-12 UEFA Europa League.

His team scored 52 goals in that season and only four Bundesliga sides scored more goals than them, of those goals; fifteen had been scored by rising star André Schürrle, and ten by Sami Allagui, who was a key part of Tuchel’s pressing system.

In the summer, Tuchel’s Mainz lost Schürrle to Bayer Leverkusen

and Allagui’s lack of form caused their fall to a thirteenth-place finish in the 2011-12 campaign.

They also suffered an early exit in the Europa League tournament, and ended the season with 39 points, the lowest total during Tuchel’s spell at Mainz.

In the 2012-13 season, Mainz would go on to repeat their thirteenth-placed finish from the last season.

Contrary to a poor start and end to the season, there were notably fewer struggles than in the previous campaign, and they finished six points below seventh place.

The 2013-14 season was Tuchel’s final season with Mainz; he led them to a seventh-place finish, qualifying for the group stages of the 2014-15 UEFA Europa League.

, who were now coached under Jürgen Klopp.

Tuchel’s Dortmund managed to score 82 goals in the 2015–16 Bundesliga, a club record, and the team’s average league possession of 61% and an average pass accuracy of 85% were remarkable improvements from their counter pressing days with Klopp.

Their point total of 78 was also the second highest in Dortmund’s history, and would have secured a league title in all but three of the previous 52 seasons. Dortmund finished second in the Bundesliga, ensuring UEFA Champions League football.

Dortmund spent heavily on player buying, in preparation for the following season, spending a total of €109.75 million in the transfer market; the club was looking to find replacements for Gündoğan, Mkhitaryan and Mats Hummels who were all key players.

Mario Götze, Ousmane Dembélé, Marc Bartra, Raphaël Guerreiro and Emre Mor were notably brought in.

It was Tuchel’s only honor with Dortmund, as he was fired three days later on 30 May 2017.
