What Is A Panic Room?

Safe rooms have been in use in some shape or form since the invention of the castle, but the modern safe room can be traced back to the Cold War and its fallout shelters. The name panic room was first popularised by the 2002 film of the same name directed by David Fincher, starring Jodie Foster and Kristen Stewart in the roles of mother and daughter.

A safe room is a room used to secure a person or multiple people from various dangers, such as home invasions, natural disasters, or even nuclear disasters. Even if you are not at risk of immediate harm, a panic room may be a good place to contact the police about burglaries or vandalism without the suspected criminals’ notice. Rich and famous people tend to have one in houses and apartments they frequent, due to their high-risk security status as wealthy people in the public eye.

The Foundations Of A Safe Panic Room

Depending on the main purpose of the safe room, people may want extra tools inside to keep them secure and comfortable until help arrives. For instance, there may be tinned, and other non-perishable food stocked for longer stays in the safe room. Some people may even splash out on plumbing and toilet facilities for extra longevity. Over-the-counter medication like contraception and ibuprofen is also sometimes kept in safe rooms. All of this depends on the temperature and conditions of any given safe room.

Above all, having a landline phone installed for the panic room will mean the occupants can also communicate with the outside world, and helps them to contact the authorities if they need it.
