Mahua Moitra is a prominent Indian politician who is also an investment banker and a Member of Parliament representing Krishna Nagar constituency as an All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) party MP. She won the seat in the 2019 Lok Sabha election.
Mahua Moitra was born on 12 October 1974 and started her political career as a member of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly and represented Karimpur from 2016 to 2019,. She is also the chief spokesperson of the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) for the past couple of years.
Moitra was born on 12 October 1974 to Dwipendra Lal Moitra in Labac in the Cachar district of Barak Valley. She hails from a Bengali Hindu Brahmin family and has a sister. She completed her Kolkatta and obtained a degree in schooling in economics and mathematics in 1998 from Mount Holyoke College South Hadley in Massachusetts, United States. She started her career as an investment banker for JPMorgan Chase in New York City and London.
Political Career
Mahua Moitra left her job with JPMorgan Chase in London in 2009 to pursue her political ambitions and first joined the INC youth wing and was associated with the “Aam Aadmi Ka Sipahi” project put forth by Rahul Gandhi. However, in 2010 she parted ways with the Indian National Congress and joined the All India Trinamool Congress and in 2016 she was elected to the 17th Lok Sabha representing Krishnanagar, West Bengal. She was made in charge of the TMC campaign in the Goa 2022 State Legislative Election.
Recent Controversy Around Mahua Moitra
Mahua Moitra, the TMC MP, and controversy is no stranger to one another. The latest controversy erupted when BJP Lok Sabha MP Nishikant Dubey accused Mahua of accepting bribes for raising questions in the Parliament Question hour. Nishikant Dubey has also asked the Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to constitute an inquiry to look into the charges.
BJP MP Nishikant Dubey accused Mahua Moitra of taking a bribe from a prominent businessman to ask questions in the Parliament. Mahua has hit back at Dubey and welcomed any inquiry on the matter. The two MPs have often been at loggerheads and had angry exchanges in the past also.
Dubey has also revealed that he has “irrefutable” proof that the TMC MP has received bribes from a prominent businessman.
Hitting back against Dubey the TMC MP has posted a rebuttal on her X Handle.
Hitting back, Moitra said on X, “Am using all my ill-gotten cash & gifts to buy a college/ university in which Degree Dubey can finally buy a real degree.”
Dubey has said that 50 of the 61 questions that Mahua had asked were related to the Adani Group. Dubey urged Birla to constitute an “inquiry committee” into the charges against her.
Mahua had in the past also got into controversies. On 10 January 2017, Mahua Moitra lodged a FIR against BJP MP Babul Supriyo for outraging her modesty during a nationwide TV debate. However, the complaint was dismissed reported News 18 by the Calcutta High Court.
Prominent media house ZEE filed a suit against Mahua for making base and unsubstantiated charges against the Media House. The case went on trial in New Delhi court where she later won the case and the charges were dismissed reported The Hindu.

The latest controversy that has erupted around the TMC MP which has become the toast of netizens on social media are pictures of Shashi Tharoor and Mahua Moitra raising a toast together and another picture that shows Mahua Moitra smoking a cigar.
The picture has led to the TMC MP being severely trolled. However, the firebrand TMC leader is also not cowed down and has taken to her X handle to reprimand the BJP culture of circulating her private photos and trying to troll her and also mocked the party saying that she likes green dresses more than white blouses. She also said that Bengali women have a life of their own and also asked the BJP why they had cropped the faces of others in the gathering. “Bengal’s women live a life, not a lie:” quipped the firebrand TMC MP.
