This year, something remarkable is occurring in the sky because Ashtami Tithi, the eighth lunar day, falls on September 6 and 7.
This has led to uncertainty on the proper day to observe Krishna Janmashtami. The Ashtami Tithi begins on September 6 at 3:37 PM and finishes on September 7 at 4:14 PM. The Rohini Nakshatra will also be visible between 9:20 a.m. on September 6 and 10:25 a.m. on September 7.
Due to this exceptional alignment, Janmashtami will be observed on September 6 and 7. The customary Dahi Handi festivities will take place on September 7, while the main Janmashtami events will take place on September 6.
Significance
Especially in Maharashtra, Dahi Handi is a prominent component of Krishna Janmashtami celebrations. A group of young people forms a human pyramid during this celebration to topple a yogurt pot (dahi) suspended high in the air. The name of this pot is handi. On his birthday, Krishna Janmashtami, and Dahi Handi celebrations are celebrated because Lord Krishna adored butter and yoghurt (dahi).
In Dahi-Handi contests, competitors cooperate to build a sturdy human pyramid while one person from the group scales the top to reach the Handi. It’s a difficult activity that calls for balance, coordination, and teamwork. Breaking the Handi is a metaphor for Lord Krishna’s playful and prankish personality.
