History

2010 saw the official recognition of World NGO Day by the participating nations during the IX Baltic Sea NGO Forum Council of the Baltic Sea States in Lithuania. Sweden, Norway, Russia, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Iceland, Germany, Finland, Estonia, and Denmark, are members of the Baltic Sea NGO Forum. The first World NGO Day was observed in Helsinki, the capital of Finland, on February 27, 2014. The Finnish Ministry of Foreign Affairs served as the event’s host. International officials from the EU, UNESCO, and UN joined hundreds of NGOs in Helsinki for the occasion.

“This is an opportunity to hoist the flag for the NGOs as well as merely acknowledge the way they affect the society we live in,” said Eric Falt, Assistant Director-General of UNESCO.
