Annually, November 10 is marked as World Science Day for Peace and Development around the globe with the aim of making the masses aware of the important role of science in the betterment and progress of society. Declared in 2001 by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the first World Science Day was celebrated in 2002.
The commemoration of this day is the result of the UNESCO and International Council for Science co-organized ‘World Science Conference for Twenty-First Century’ that was held in 1999 in Budapest, Hungary.
The conference was held with the aim of setting new goals for the use of science and the knowledge of scientists in the twenty-first century. Altogether, representatives sustained the matter of extending awareness among the people about science, and the same event representatives of Ethiopia and Malawi, along with the British Association for Advancement of Science (BSA) proposed the idea of celebrating World Science Day.
