All Saints’ Day, often referred to as “All Hallows’ Day,” “Hallowmas,” or the “Feast of All Saints,” is observed to honour all the church’s saints, both well-known and obscure, who have ascended to heaven. The day is honoured each year on November 1 in the religion of Christianity and on the first Sunday following Pentecost in the eastern church. Roman Catholics refer to it as an obligatory holy day.
The origins of All Saints’ Day can be traced to the fourth century when a day was set aside on the Sunday after Pentecost to honour all the saints and martyrs.
According to legend, the first All Saints’ Day was observed on May 13, 609 CE. After Pope Boniface IV received a gift from Emperor Phocas in Rome in honour of the Pantheon, this was done. In response, the Pope declared this day a national holiday in honour of the Blessed Virgin Mary and all martyrs.
The day was moved to November 1 as well as expanded to include all the saints in 835 CE, under Pope Gregory III. It is thought that this date was deliberately selected to succeed the pagan holiday of Samhain when supernatural beings prowled around and hunted for mankind.
People decided to dress as beasts to lure spirits. After November 1 was observed as a Christian holiday, this was moved up and given the names Halloween and All Hallows’ Eve.
Presbyterians combined it with All Souls’ Day on November 2, but that was banned as a church holiday in 1770. Nevertheless, some people still celebrate it on the first Sunday in November. Allhallowtide is the period from October 31 to November 2.
