FSSAI Initiates Prosecution Against FBOs Found Violating Food Safety Laws

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), the nation’s apex food regulator, has taken resolute action against Food Business Operators (FBOs) discovered to be flouting food safety laws. A press release on this action was issued on 14th September, 2023.

According to official records, 1,411 prosecution cases have been initiated against FBOs found in violation of the provisions outlined in the Food Safety and Standards (FSS) Act of 2006 since April 1, 2023.

The prosecutions leveled against these FBOs encompass a spectrum of violations, including operating a food business without a valid license and manufacturing or selling unsafe food products. This fiscal year, FSSAI has intensified its scrutiny, conducting extensive testing of various food categories such as milk and milk products, spices, packaged drinking water, nutraceuticals, sauces, pickles, chips, jaggery, and more, to ensure compliance with product standards and safety regulations.

In a concerted effort, FSSAI, in collaboration with State and Union Territory Food Authorities, has been consistently monitoring the quality and safety of food products available to consumers nationwide. This process involves the meticulous drawing and testing of food samples. Food Business Operators found to be in contravention of these rules are liable to face fines and legal action under the provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act of 2006.

FSSAI’s primary objective is to curb non-compliant practices within the food industry and ensure that consumers across the nation have access to safe and high-quality food products. This endeavor is being pursued through rigorous inspections, continuous monitoring, and comprehensive enforcement campaigns.

FSSAI strongly advises all Food Business Operators to adhere to the prescribed food product standards and maintain strict adherence to safe and hygienic manufacturing practices. Any deviation from these guidelines may lead to stringent legal action against the offending FBOs.
