FSSAI issues clarification on sale of hemp seeds and seed products.

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India on 10th November 2022, has clarified that the hemp seeds and seed products are standardized under sub-regulation 2.16 of the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Regulations, 2011 and these products shall be allowed on E-commerce website subject to holding a valid FSSAI license and compliance with the standards so prescribed.

It has come to the notice of FSSAI that the E-commerce Food Business Operators are not allowing listing of the above mentioned products on their web portals, based on the order issued by FSSAI on the title “illegal manufacture/import/sale of products made from hemp and hemp seeds by some companies using FSSAI licence number on its label” Therefore based on the representation, it has been clarified that the hemp seeds and seed products are standardized under sub-regulation 2.16 of the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Regulations, 2011.
