Cinema, Politics, And Society

Tags: film political

Societies are built by human socialization. From the age of primitivism to today’s data technology era societies have kept on evolving. Nearly every aspect of humankind leaves some of its reflections on its society. From a local election to a cricket match, all by default shall grant a share of their consequence to their respective societies. Cinemas are not alien either. Politics; yeah who can even deny its implications and contributions. A human is bound by different laws like legal, social, moral, etc. so is the society bound in them too. Our nation is politically a federal entity and the largest democracy in the world to exist with local pressure groups doing good, have driven many phenomena to realize by its own rule and measure.  Censor Board of Film Certification is an entity incorporated in this country meant to be impartial in its job of supervising films made and certify them properly, which many times loses popularity and just becomes a headache to survive through for certain filmmakers. Political unrest too, be national, on a state level or locally troubles and have troubled many films. Thus the biggest medium of expression gets awfully rattled in the largest democracy. Hindrances, agitations, beliefs, customs, all can come hard at films not obliging them. Ban on films has occurred quite a time in our nation. Be it a social cause or a political cause, films may fall flat if deviated from the rules and norms hailed by the particular entity.  Film marketing and distribution too get heavily influenced by political pressure both nationally and internationally. The political relations of different countries motivate film distribution and screening between the nations. Likewise, culture, economic, demographic and other perspectives also played a large role in film distribution among countries from the U.K. to the USA, from Germany to Italy, etc. Hence not only one’s own nation but the societies of other nations also contribute to motivating a film and its fate.

In India films like Aandhi, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, Fire, Kamasutra, Kissa Kursi Ka, Bhobisyoter Bhoot and many more have struggled to be accepted by some political parties or in some cases by pressure groups and the public themselves. On the contrary, political idealism, societal causes have worked as a source of motivation for many filmmakers for years. Films have inspired revolutions in many societies for a good cause. Students of good film institutions like the International Institute of Film and Fine Arts should understand these spheres of film and its relation with politics and society, for India to get good and responsible filmmakers in the future. Acting, editing, direction with screen playwriting, cinematography, photography and advanced film making are taught here.
