Great Black Wasp – Everything you need to know in 2023

There are thousands of wasps in the world. With its unique climate and weather, the western part of the US gets some stinging pests that other parts of the country don’t. In the west of the United States, you can find wasps like the unique but potentially painful Tarantula Hawk Wasp. Other solitary wasp species may not create big infestations or nests but might set up their nests around your home and put you and your family at risk. One of the more common type is the great black wasp.  In 1749, John Bartram’s (English botanist) description of the Great Black Wasp was recognized by the Royal Society of the City of London as the first record of an insect in the new world. In 1763, Casl Linnaeus labeled it taxonomically. Over 130 Black Wasp species have been identified in science; these insects also go by “digger wasps” as they dig the ground while nesting. Appearance The Great Black digger wasp (Sphex pensylvanicus) is a species of digger wasp approximately 20-30 mm long.
