Surprising Facts About THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) – What Is It and Where Is It Used For?

THC is the acronym for tetrahydrocannabinol, the main cannabinoid in cannabis that gives users the sensation of being “high.”

The history of THC dates back to 2727 BC, when records indicate that it was used by the Chinese Emperor Shen Nung.

THC throughout history was used for various purposes by the ancient Romans and Greeks, and in the Middle East and throughout the Arabic lands down to North Africa.

THC was not necessarily used for getting high, but instead was used as hemp to make clothing, ropes, and paper.

In addition to commercial uses, THC is also used for medical purposes.

Medical THC extracts allow for the THC component to be derived from the cannabis plant, after which it can be made into pills, capsules, tinctures, and oil.

The molecular structure of THC and its compatibility with the human physiology makes it well-suited for a variety of medicinal purposes.

THC Molecule

The THC molecule is perfectly designed to bind to cannabinoid receptors already extant in the human brain.

The areas of the brain that contain cannabinoid receptors are associated with memory, coordination, pleasure, and perceptions of time.

THC Chemical Structure

The chemical THC structure is C21H30O2 and its chemical name is (–)-trans-Δ⁹-tetrahydrocannabinol.

In its naturally occurring form, the THC cannabinoid is actually THCA, which stands for tetrahydrocannabinol acid.

Decarboxylation, or the removal of a carboxyl group, facilitates the change of THCA to THC. THC is the compound that allows users to get high.

So when comparing THC vs THCA, it’s THC levels that you want to look for when pursuing a high.

Pure THC

Currently, there is no form of 100 percent pure THC, but there’s something close – THC-A Crystalline.

While the majority of cannabis concentrates are anywhere from 50 to 80 percent THC, THC-A Crystalline is 99.9 percent pure THC extract.

The highest strain in THC is like an elusive dream that growers attempt to make a reality year after year.

Anything over 20 percent THC content is considered a high THC strain, and the top high THC strains have anywhere between 25 to 30 percent.

Current contenders for high THC strain include:

  • Bruce Banner
  • Girl Scout Cookies
  • Gorilla Glue
  • The White
  • White Fire OG

CBD vs THC

The two biggest acronyms in the cannabis industry right now are CBD and THC, and while many cannabis products contain both compounds, they have significantly different effects on the user.

Whether you fall on the medical or recreational side, you’ll want to know the difference between the two.

What is CBD?

What does CBD stand for? CBD is the acronym for cannabidiol, which along with THC, is one of the main active cannabinoids in cannabis.

Unlike THC, which is the main cannabinoid that gives users the “high” feeling, CBD is not psychoactive, so it does not get users high.

In fact, it can reduce the psychoactive effects of THC. The positive effects of CBD are why it is the primary cannabinoid used in research for medicinal marijuana studies.

CBD Effects

CBD has many beneficial effects, which is why it has piqued the interests of the medical community.

If you’re wondering whether to choose CBD vs THC for pain, then CBD is the cannabinoid you’ll want to keep an eye out for.

The benefits of CBD include:

  • Anti-inflammatory
  • Pain relief
  • Nausea-reducing
  • Seizure reducing
  • Neuroprotective antioxidant
  • Anti-psychotic
  • Anxiolytic (anxiety-reducing)
  • Antidepressant
  • Possible anti-tumor effects

High CBD Strains

Anything with over 4 percent CBD is considered a high CBD strain, and some of the highes strains contain as much as 8 to 10 percent.

The top high CBD strains that people use for medicinal purposes include:+++++++++++

  • Charlotte’s Web
  • Sour Tsunami
  • Harlequin
  • Jamaican Lion

CBD Oil Effects

The effects of CBD are most potent in CBD oil.

Medicinal marijuana users often use CBD oil because it allows them to forego the harmful effects of smoking cannabis while still benefiting from its medicinal properties.

CBD oil can be added to any food or taken directly as a tincture.

How to Make CBD Oil

To make CBD oil, one can use the same processes involved in making THC oil (below), but substitute the THC strain with a high CBD strain.

Check out our step-by-step guide to make CBD tincture to make your own CBD oil in a matter of hours.

Does CBD get you high?

On its own, CBD does not get you high. For the high feeling, look for a strain with higher THC: CBD ratio.

In fact, CBD can counteract or reduce the psychoactive effects of THC.

Marijuana users who do not want the anxiety brought on by THC often look for strains with higher CBD content to smooth out the overall high.

That being said, many strains contain both CBD and THC, so it is possible to get a high CBD strain that contains medicinal properties and still provides a nice buzz.

Does CBD oil get you high?

The high that one might experience from CBD oil depends on the ratio of THC: CBD. It is possible to get high from CBD oil if it has a high percentage of THC.

Lower amounts of THC in CBD oil will lead to a reduced high.

Paying attention to the acronyms is important since in addition to CBD oil, there are various types of THC oil.

THC Oil

THC oil is oil infused with THC extract.

THC oil most often contains both THC and cannabidiol (CBD), and it is created through various extraction processes, often involving pressurizing the cannabis with butane or mixing the cannabis with a solvent and extracting the THC concentrate.

In addition to the euphoria induced by cannabis, there are numerous medical benefits to THC.

Research suggests that THC can help reduce convulsive seizures, treat the side effects of chemotherapy, provide pain relief for glaucoma, and manage behavioral issues in children with severe autism, just to name a few.

Another benefit of THC oil is its form.

Compared to other forms of cannabis and THC, such as flower, THC oil is more suitable for medical treatment purposes because it does not require users to deal with the potentially adverse effects of smoking.

THC oil can be added to any food, or it can be directly ingested using a dropper.

THC Vape Oil

Similar to pure THC oil, THC vape oil is also a THC-infused extract.

The difference between the two is that THC vape oil is specifically manufactured for vape pens and uses propylene glycol as a primary ingredient.

Vaporizing THC mitigates the adverse effects of smoking by heating up the oil to the proper temperature for the release of THC.

How to Make THC Oil

You can find THC oil for sale in states with legalized medical and /or recreational marijuana, but it is also possible to make your own hemp oil at home.

The process for how to make THC oil requires:

  • 1 ounce medical-grade marijuana
  • 1 gallon high-proof alcohol (e.g. Everclear)
  • Mixing bowl
  • 2-qt mixing cup
  • 1 wooden spoon
  • Straining tools (cheese cloth or coffee filter and mesh strainer)
  • 1 silicone spatula
  • 1 double boiler
  • Plastic oral syringe

Steps:

1. Soak marijuana and half a gallon of alcohol in the mixing bowl. Alcohol should be approximately 1 inch above surface of marijuana. Stir for two to three minutes.

2. Strain cannabis-alcohol contents into the 2-qt container. Filtered liquid should be dark green.

3. Soak, stir, and strain again for a second wash.

4. Fill bottom of double boiler with water. Pour green liquid into top pan. Set burner to high and wait for liquid in top pan to boil. Once boiling, immediately turn off the burner. The heat from the bottom pan will burn off the rest of the alcohol.

5. Leave the contents in the top pan for 15 to 25 minutes, stirring occasionally and scraping the bottom of the pan with the spatula.

6. If liquid extract is thin, simmer contents until the liquid bubbles again, then immediately turn off the burner.

7. When the mixture thickens to a syrup, the extraction is complete. Take pan off boiler and allow to cool.

8. THC oil can be stored in the plastic oral syringes for ease of use, and the excess oil should be kept in an airtight container. Store the THC oil in a cool, dark place

A similar process can be used to make cannabis infused coconut oil, and the steps to making THC oil are vital for making THC vape oil.

How to Make THC Vape Oil

To make THC vape oil for your vape pen, you’ll need to first make your own THC oil, as described above.

Check out the next section on Thc Vape Juice to find out how to make THC vape oil.

Among the many ways to consume or partake of cannabis, vape pens have become increasingly popular.

Vape pens use a battery to heat an internal coil, which warms up the vape juice to the right temperature to vaporize the liquid, allowing for a smoother hit every time.

THC Vape Juice

THC vape juice is the vape oil made for vaporizers that has been infused with THC extract.

The only difference between regular vape juice and vape juice with THC is the THC concentrate in the latter.

THC E-Juice

There isn’t a distinction between THC vape juice and THC e-juice, and in both vaporizing and cannabis communities, the two are used interchangeably.

THC E-Liquid

THC e-liquid is simply another term for the juice that goes in the vaporizer.

It should be noted that some e-liquids contain ethylene glycol for the vaporizing ingredient, which should be avoided.

Ethylene glycol breaks down into harmful by-products, so if you see it listed on your THC e-liquid, user beware.

THC Vape Juice Recipe

If you are looking for THC juice for sale, you’ll need to be a resident of one of the states where marijuana is legal.

If you don’t happen to reside in one of those states, the good news is that you can make your own THC juice.

For a THC vape juice recipe, you’ll need:

  • THC oil
  • EJMix
  • 1 syringe needle
  • A bowl of boiling water
  • 1 airtight, sealable container
  • Vape pen cartridges (empty)

How to Make DIY THC Vape Juice

Follow these simple steps to make your own THC vape juice.

Process:

1. Mix equal parts THC oil and EJ mix, or other food-grade Propylene glycol, in the airtight container. When first starting out, it is best to experiment by starting out with 1mL of each solution.

2. Close the container and set in bowl of boiling water.

3. Leave emulsion for 3 minutes.

4. Remove container and shake thoroughly. For larger mixtures, it may be necessary to stir the emulsion.

5. Using the syringe, fill the cartridges with your THC vape juice.

THC is available for consumption in many forms, from oil, to vape juice, and even pills and wax.

THC Pills

THC pills are capsules infused with cannabis. The benefits of THC pills include achieving a comparable high, avoiding the hazards of smoking, and minimizing caloric intake.

The great thing about THC pills is that you can still get high, the same as you would if you were to smoke or ingest cannabis.

The amount of time that the high from THC pills can last depends on how many you ingest and how potent the cannabis infusion is within the capsules.

THC Capsules

Some highly rated and recommended brands for THC capsules include:

  • WanaCapsXR
  • RX Green’s Autopilot Capsules
  • Canna Caps
  • Purely Medicinal Cannabis Capsules
  • Green Soma THC Capsules

How to Make THC Pills

In addition to purchasing THC capsules, you can also make your own THC pills.

What you need:

  • 10 grams cannabis flower
  • Grinder or food processor
  • ¼ cup extra virgin coconut oil
  • 50 empty gelatin capsules
  • Crock pot
  • Baking sheet
  • Parchment paper
  • Wooden spoon
  • Syringe (tapered, 10 mL)
  • Cheesecloth

Steps:

1. Pre-heat the oven to 220 degrees.

2. Set crockpot to low.

3. Grind cannabis and evenly spread out on parchment-lined baking sheet.

4. Bake cannabis for one hour to allow for maximum decarboxylation.

5. Add coconut oil to crockpot.

6. Once cannabis is done baking, remove from oven and grind to powder.

7. Add cannabis to crockpot.

8. Let cannabis-coconut oil mixture cook for 3 hours. Stir every half hour for first 2 hours.

9. After 3 hours, strain cannabis-coconut mixture through cheesecloth into small container. Do not let the oil cool too much or it will harden.

10. Squeeze out any remaining oil from cheesecloth.

11. Using syringe, transfer strained canna-coconut oil into empty gel capsules.

12. Refrigerate and enjoy as desired!

If you’re seeking more potent forms of THC, read on to discover the wonders of THC wax in its many forms.

What Is Dabbing and What Are Dabs?

Dabs are any THC concentrate made with either butane or carbon dioxide.

Dabs include ear wax, shatter, budder, and BHO. Dabbing refers to the act of smoking dabs.

The benefit of dabs is the most intense high you’ve probably ever experienced.

The highly potent concentrate also makes dabs more expensive than plain flower or edibles. Dabs can vary in price from $70–$100 per gram.

How to Make Dabs

The method of making dabs depends on whether you want to make wax, budder, or shatter.

How to Smoke Dabs

Smoking dabs can take many forms. One can add a touch of dab to a bowl, joint, or blunt, but the high is so intense that it is also possible to smoke a dab on its own using a dab rig.

To smoke with a dab rig, you’ll need a reliable torch to be able to heat the glass of the rig to the correct temperature.

You can also use a vaporizer to smoke a dab.

What is BHO?

BHO stands for butane hash oil. It refers to the various dabs discussed here, including wax, shatter, and budder.

Like dabs, it is a general term that refers to the general category of cannabis extracts.

But unlike dabs, which refer to the form, BHOs refers to the extraction process for the hash oil.

How to Make BHO

Making BHO involves blasting butane into a tube of cannabis flower in order to extract the hash oil.

Sometimes several cans of butane can be necessary before the extraction process is complete.

How to Smoke BHO

BHO can be smoked any number of ways, from using vaporizers and dab rigs, to sprinkling some of it on to regular cannabis flower.

What is THC wax?

THC wax, also commonly referred to as “ear wax,” is a thick, golden oil that almost looks like honey.

It is made from hash and butane. The THC content typically tests at around 80 percent.

The prices for THC wax can vary by state and even by store. In general, prices range from $70–$100 per gram.

The effects of ear wax are an enhanced high that far exceeds the high one might experience from smoking cannabis flower.

Only one dab of ear wax can go a long way for users. Side effects can range from euphoria, to increased psychotropic experiences, nausea, and dizziness.

How to Smoke THC Wax

There are a number of ways to smoke pure THC wax. You can add small dabs on top of regular flower in a bowl, joint, or blunt.

You can also use a bong or dab rig by adding a dab of the THC wax into the rig and then heating the outer glass of the rig with a small blowtorch.

THC Wax Pens

Another method of smoking THC wax is to use a THC wax pen. The principle behind the wax pen is the same as the dab rig,

in that the THC wax gets heated to searing temperatures and releases its potent smoke.

How to Make THC Wax

To make THC wax, you’ll need the following:

  • Long glass tube
  • Large petrie dish
  • Butane
  • Coffee filter
  • 1 ounce of ground flower

Steps:

1. Put the ground flower in the glass tube.

2. Cover one end with a coffee filter and secure in place.

3. On the uncovered end, blast the butane into the marijuana. A thick oily substance will start to ooze out through the filter and into the petrie dish.

4. Set the petrie dish in a pan of water until boiling.

5. When the oil starts to boil, the water will evaporate from the oil, leaving a thick, waxy substance.

What is THC / Marijuana Shatter

THC shatter is a type of dab that resembles shattered glass.

It’s color is typically clear to amber, depending on how the shatter was processed, the heat during the making, the moisture at the time of formation, and the amounts of terpenes in the shatter.

The benefits of marijuana shatter is that it is likely the most pure THC available and the cleanest form of dab.

Pricing for shatter is typically around $90, depending on the state, store, and quality.

How to Make Marijuana Shatter

The initial steps of extracting hash oil with butane for making shatter is similar to the process of making THC wax.

However, because shatter is of superior quality, it also requires cannabis with higher concentrates of trichomes (the crystals on the flower).

Once the butane extraction is complete, the evaporation process is more complex that for making THC wax.

What you’ll need:

  • Large glass dish
  • 3 cfm one-stage vac pump
  • Metal bucket with outtake hole
  • Pressure gauge

Steps:

1. Set the glass dish containing the highly concentrated hash oil in the bucket.

2. Put the lid on the bucket.

3. Extract the air and butane from the bucket at 91 degrees over the course of 16 to 30 hours.

4. Check the pressure gauge for consistent temperature, so you don’t burn the shatter.

5. When the process is complete, you’ll be left with an amber, candy-like shatter.

How to Smoke Marijuana Shatter

As with the other dabs, you can smoke shatter by sprinkling small bits of it onto a bowl, joint, or blunt, or you can use a dab rig.

If you don’t have a dab rig here you can learn how to smoke without a dab rig.

What is THC / Marijuana budder?

THC budder is recognizable for its creamy, buttery color and waxy texture.

It is a variant of THC wax, but budder has a more “whipped-butter” appearance.

The benefits of marijuana budder are the same as the other dab forms, with an intense high, possible psychotropic effects, and requiring only a small amount to attain euphoria.

The potential side effects are also the same, including nausea and dizziness.

Pricing for THC budder varies, although it tends to be less expensive than shatter. Budder generally goes for around $80.

How to Make Marijuana Budder

The initial butane extraction process for budder is the same as for wax and shatter.

It is during the butane purging process that the method differs.

As the butane is being purged, producers will whip the hash oil so that it attains a fluffy texture.

How to Smoke Marijuana Budder

The many potentials for smoking marijuana budder are the same as for wax and shatter.

The various forms of THC intake—flower, oil, vape juice, and dabs – as well as the frequency of intake affect how long THC stays in your system.

How long does THC stay in your system?

If you’re trying to figure out how to pass a drug test, check out the answers to some very common FAQs from cannabis users.

You can also find out how to get THC out of your system fast.

The duration of time that THC stays in your system depends on the frequency of the user’s cannabis consumption.

According to the National Drug Court Institute, one-time users might be cleared of cannabinoids in their systems after 3 to 4 days. Regular and chronic users can expect the THC to linger for up to 21 days.

The common public belief is that it takes approximately 30 days for the system to be complete cleared of THC.

How long does THC stay in your urine?

Again, the frequency of usage determines how long THC stays in one’s system.

Most drug tests around the country use urine to test for drugs, so knowing how long THC stays in your urine can help determine whether or not you’ll pass that test.

Depending on how often and how long you’ve been using cannabis, THC can show up in urine samples anywhere from 5 days to possibly over two months:

  • First time use: 5–8 days
  • Use two to four times per week: 11–18 days
  • Five to six times per week: 33–48 days
  • Chronic users (every day usage): 49–63 days
  • Veteran users (decades-long users): 77 days

How long does THC stay in your hair?

THC lingers the longest in hair follicles. Drug hair testing takes 1.5 inches of hair, measured from the scalp.

For most people, 1.5 inches of hair is about 3 months, or 90 days, of hair growth.

So to pass a drug test, users should abstain from cannabis for approximately 90 days.

How long does THC stay in your blood?

The amount of THC in the blood depends on several factors: frequency of use, metabolism, body mass index, and consumption method.

If you inhale THC, it will show up in your blood within seconds, while consumption of edibles can make THC manifest in your blood within 5 to 10 minutes.

Single-time users might see THC cleared from their blood within 1 to 2 days.

For heavy users, it can take a week for THC to be cleared from the blood.

How to Get THC out of Your System Fast

Unfortunately, there’s no surefire way to get THC out of your system fast aside from abstaining altogether.

You can exercise, drink large amounts of water, sweat it out at a sauna, or eat plenty of leafy greens to speed up the process of excreting THC from your system.

However, for heavy users, these methods may not be effective.

It’s also possible to use fake urine or try one of the methods discussed in the THC Detox section below.

Best THC Detox

Detoxing your body means cleansing it of all traces of undesired substances. There are a number of ways and types of detoxing, including detox pills and THC detox drinks.

Of course, the best THC detox is to abstain from THC intake altogether.

But sometimes it is necessary to flush the system more quickly, so the next best detox is to do a combination of detox methods.

The process of detoxing essentially flushes the offending substance from your body, and depending on the type of detox desired, various detox methods will target the specific substance in order to purge it from the system.

THC Detox Kit

The tools you need for a THC detox kit will depend on the detox method you choose, but one tool that is essential is a home drug test.

A home drug test will let you check the levels of THC found in your system to see if the detox is working properly.

Various THC detox kits are available online or in stores, but it is also possible to make your own THC detox home remedies.

THC Detox Drinks

These detox drink recipes are effective for passing a urine test within the next one or two weeks.

Apple Cider Vinegar + Fruit Pectin + Water

Apple cider vinegar is a natural antioxidant that acts as a diuretic. Fruit pectin is a fiber that keeps THC from entering the bloodstream.

By flushing your system and replenishing with plenty of water, you can dilute the urine and lower the levels of THC detected in the system.

Cranberry + Kale Smoothie:

  • ½ cup fresh cranberries
  • ½ cup kale
  • ¼ cup blueberries
  • ½ cup coconut milk
  • Ice

To make this smoothie, simply blend all the ingredients together. Cranberry juice is known to act as a diuretic that naturally flushes the system.

Kale is a leafy green that will facilitate bowel movements, and much of the THC in your system will come out in stool.

The blueberries contain antioxidants. Coconut milk helps to detox the organs.

THC Detox Pills

THC detox pills are also available from stores or online retailers. The ingredients of detox pills can include niacin, B vitamins, and creatine.

How to Make THC Detox Pills

Before explaining how to make THC detox pills, it will probably help to know the difference between THC pills and THC detox pills.

While THC pills, or capsules, are designed to get you high, THC detox pills are made to flush THC out of your system.

You can purchase THC detox pills online, which may be the easiest and most affordable route. But if you prefer to keep a large supply of it, you can also make it yourself.

To make THC detox pills, you’ll need the following:

  • Creatine powder
  • B-complex vitamins
  • Burdock Root
  • Dandelion Root
  • Rhubarb Root
  • Goldenseal
  • Sheep Sorrel Herb
  • Cat’s Claw Bark
  • Empty capsules

Mix these ingredients together, making sure each ingredient is ground into a fine powder.

Once the ingredients are thoroughly mixed, carefully fill each capsule with this detox power combo.

How to Cleanse Your Body from THC

To cleanse your body, it is recommended to do a combination of detox methods, including the drinks and/or pills listed above.

One can also do a natural detox by drinking excessive amounts of water, exercising intensively, and eating lots of greens.
