HEATHERS THE MUSICAL|REVIEW

Last week I was lucky enough to see the INCREDIBLE UK production of Heathers The Musical that is currently playing at The Other Palace Theatre in London. After fighting so hard for so long on the day tickets went on sale in April, my friend Katie and I were able to land some tickets to see the show on June 16th. I was VERY happy that we managed to get tickets as the show has now completely sold out its entire run. How insane!!

Most theatre fans will know that Heathers is somewhat of a cult classic and is therefore significantly popular with a large number of people within the theatre community. But being genuinely honest, I had hardly even heard of the show when they announced that it was coming to London. On this occasion, I bought tickets purely because of the casting choice, which I wouldn’t normally do, HOWEVER, as soon as we got tickets I downloaded the soundtrack and quickly became a fan of everything about the show. I could 100% see the hype behind it and I know that even without the casting decision they made, it would definitely be the sort of musical that would be right up my street.

When the day finally came for us to see the show I was SO excited! Carrie Hope Fletcher is one of my absolute favourite people in the world and a huge role model to me, and despite loving her for about 5 or 6 years, I had never had the opportunity to see her in a show. So, by the time we sat down in our seats in the theatre I was practically bouncing off of the walls with excitement.

From the perspective of someone who was not at all invested in the show before seeing it, I thought this show was just incredible. The atmosphere in the room throughout the whole show was unlike anything I’ve experienced before and every single person up on that stage just gave the most incredible performance. It was amazing!

New Songs
Despite this being the first production I’d ever seen, I could still manage to see the reason certain songs had been replaced. I absolutely loved the new song ‘You’re Welcome’ that was put in place of the old song ‘Blue’. I personally found it fit that particular production better and I loved that Veronica got to kick ass in that scene. (Not that she doesn’t kick ass in a lot of scenes. Because she absolutely does!)

Audience Reaction/Interaction
Normally when I watch shows at the theatre, as weird as it may sound, I don’t feel part of an audience. I normally always feel like it’s just me, and of course whoever I go with, but because I’m always so focused on what I’m watching I never really feel part of a group. This made being part of the Heathers audience so incredibly refreshing and new to me, as despite still being so engrossed in what I was seeing on stage, I felt more a part of the audience than I ever had before. The atmosphere in the theatre that night was completely electric, people were cheering, clapping along, really getting involved with the show, at the end of the show we were all up dancing along with the cast as they made their bows, it was one of the best atmospheres I’ve ever experienced at a show and it really made me feel like the audience was one, rather than several individuals. It was amazing and really something I think is completely unique.

Cast
The cast of this show honestly just completely blew me away. I feel like I always say this every time I see a show but it’s only because every show I see manages to blow me away and it is usually because of the cast within the show. When you bare in mind the fact that the last show I saw at the theatre was Hamilton, and then take the fact that I 100% think this production is on par with Hamilton in so many ways, I think that’s a pretty big hint at how INSANE this show really is.
I thought the whole cast of Heathers did the most phenomenal job, but of course there were some standouts who I couldn’t NOT mention.

Jodie Steele as Heather Chandler – Her performance was one of the best things I’ve ever seen, to play someone as complex as Heather Chandler with such rigour is so incredibly impressive. Even from the back row (the only place we could manage to get seats) her facial expressions were amazing. She really made you think she WAS Heather Chandler!

Rebecca Lock as Miss Fleming – Her energy as Miss Fleming was just magical. In a show like Heathers that covers some seriously dark and rather depressing topics, I felt like Miss Fleming’s character really needed to have a flare, and Rebecca 100% brought that flare. Shine A Light is an absolute bop and the way she sings it is so so sooo good!

Jamie Muscato as J.D – Jamie gave one of the most incredible performances I have ever seen. Knowing what I know about the show and the characters in it I have no doubt in my mind that J.D is a difficult character to play, I mean, that dude has some damage! But the way Jamie played him with an innocence, like a normal 17 year old, and then slowly brought out his psycho, damaged side was just breathtaking to me.

Carrie Hope Fletcher as Veronica Sawyer – Maybe I’m biased just a little bit because she is one of my favourite people, but Carrie’s performance in this show was the best she’s ever done, compared to her previous shows. Even though I hadn’t actually seen her in a show before Heathers, I have seen clips and videos from previous shows and performances she’s done but this was just something else entirely. Veronica seems like such a different character to the previous characters she has played but I really do think that’s a good thing and I think she is absolutely smashing this role. From what I saw, I think this role is the one that is giving Carrie the chance to show how amazing an actress she is.
P.S. I’m honestly still dead after the Dead Girl Walking scene.

I honestly cannot praise this show enough. It exceeded all of my expectations and I really wish I could go back and see it again. I would watch it every single day if I had the opportunity to!
I really REALLY hope Heathers gets a transfer to the West End because a short run seems such a waste on such an incredible show. I would say go and see it if you haven’t already, but the whole run is sold out… so that may be a bit difficult!

Until next time.
