Movie Review – Alice Through The Looking Glass

Sadly, producers of Alice Through The Looking Glass fail to realise that the appeal of Wonderland lies not in its weird characters, but in its ambivalent sanity.

You’d agree with me when I say Alice in Wonderland was one of the darkest, most disturbing children’s story ever written? Beneath the eccentric characters and outrageous places are all those distressing questions. Just what was it all about? Did Alice really visited Wonderland, or was she in truth a terribly disturbed child soon to grow into some kind of sociopath? If you think these questions are ridiculous, consider that many writers have long speculated about them. There’s even a psychological horror game in 2000 that portrayed Alice as a knife wielding asylum patient.

Alice In Wonderland (2010) firmly rejected these speculations by reimagining Alice as a headstrong heroine destined to save Wonderland. In Alice Through The Looking Glass, producers went all the way and rewrote the story as an epic journey with an emphasis on redemption. This still entertains, to an extent, and there are sporadic moments in the movie that either awe or enchant. Problem though, one reads or watches Alice stories not for adventure, but to flirt with the concept of sanity. For every villain to be given a sympathetic back-story, and to ultimately find salvation, doesn’t that just destroys the appeal? Wonderland, in this way, was sadly reduced to no more than your run-of-the-mill talking-animals fantasy world.
