Just from casual observation of what people are wearing today, it’s clear that fashion is becoming Edgier. In the 1970s and 1980s, we had punk rock and all of the stylistic trends that came with it. Then, at the start of the 1990s, bands like Nirvana showed us the joys of Grunge, which soon spilt out into the popular culture. Today, we the likes of Miley Cyrus, we see a return to the edgier styles of the past, with various motifs trickling out into the popular culture.

A lot of women are, frankly, tired of the “good girl” look. They want something a little more daring than the generic clothes available at high street retailers but worry that they might overstep the mark.

In this post, we’re going to take a look at some of the secrets of an edgier style. Don/t worry - you won’t end up looking like a punk rocker with a shaven head. You will, however, inject a little personality into your appearance, helping people to remember you and what you stand for.

Skip Makeup, Except For Red Lipstick

Over the past few years, we’ve seen more women going “makeup-free” in an attempt to throw off the shackles of societal beauty standards. While the movement is yet to hit the mainstream, the example that it sets is instructive. It shows that if you want to create an impression, sometimes LESS is more.

Wearing no makeup except for thick, red lipstick is a surefire way to get noticed. You’re emphasizing one part of your face and then letting the rest blend into the background. It’s a daring look but can really pay off when combined with the right outfit.

If that’s too much, then you can always try other kinds of “impact makeup” like only using eye shadow or using black lipstick instead of red.

Wear More Dark Colors

While bright colors might be beautiful, light and airy, they’ve never been Edgy. A pretty summer dress doesn’t evoke the same sense of excitement as, say, a black choker.

Black clothes, however, have always been a staple of people who want to appear “edgy” throughout the generations, beginning in the 1970s. Don’t be afraid to add black bracelets, neckwear, t-shirts, or leggings - they can all make a big difference.

Wear Studs

Take a moment to look at anyone you admire who dresses in an edgy way. Almost always, you’ll notice them wearing studs anywhere they can: ears, navel, nipples, hands, cheeks, nose, and lips. Studs come in a wide variety of shapes and styles, designed for different parts of the body. You can check out more gold cartilage jewelry styles online. You can stick to one or two piercings, or you can experiment with more - the choice is yours.

Make Your Clothes Look More Distressed

Part of making your style edgier is creating the sense that you’ve been through the wars. The more traumatized that you can make yourself look, the more believable your style will be.

The best way to distress your clothes is to bleach-wash them. This technique helps to remove some of the brighter inks from the garment, making it look as if it has been worn for much longer than it has.

If you wear denim, you’re also free to add your own lacerations and graze marks to the fabric using scissors or rubbing it on concrete and then adding a patch to cover the hole behind.

Add 90s Accessories

Politically speaking, the 1990s were a relatively genteel decade in the West. Nothing much happened. From a style perspective, however, it was one of the edgiest times on record.

Try wearing big, Top Gun style sunglasses and chokers. Add multiple bracelets, all dark, and mix and match your rings.

Make A Statement With A T-Shirt

Today the internet is awash with t-shirts that can say anything you want, and merch vendors are making a killing, but it wasn’t always this way. In the 1990s, ordering custom t-shirts was much more difficult, and using them to display controversial messages and symbols far rarer.

You don’t have to make a political statement if you don’t want to. But it can be fun to use specific symbols to communicate the fact that you don’t always have to be a good girl.

Remember, being edgy in 2020 is all about being subtle. We’re not returning to the heyday of 1980s punk anytime soon. Instead, we’re entering an era where small outfit changes can communicate a lot about your mood, values, and outlook.
